Re-Grades are in from PCGS Regular Service: 3 Buffs and 1 Wash. upgrade

I submitted these in person to PCGS at the Long Beach show when my Lincoln Registry Set was auctioned on June 3rd. They show them being received on June 9th. Received the grades on July 9th.

It was an 18 coin submission that I received when they were late on a previous submission (not a bad deal).

I received 4 upgrades. 3 were on Buffalo nickels and 1 was a Washington Quarter. The nicest upgrade was a 1928 Buffalo (previously MS65) that went MS66 and was the coin that I was the most sure would upgrade out of the bunch. It is a beautiful nickel. Still no luck with copper this year. I re-submitted a few 51-S Lincolns that are every bit as nice as the MS67RD one I sold at Auction...but they keep coming back MS66RD (it might be time to give up on those). I also had a 35-D Buffalo go MS65 (previously MS64).

I sent in a raw Merc Dime that is now housed in a MS61FB holder that PCGS says in my Registry set is a POP 0 coin with many hundreds higher!!!! I can't believe my luck! I obviously thought the coin would come back MS65FB or MS66FB...but can't grade Mercs worth a darn yet. It is now the lowest graded coin that I own in a PCGS holder. But hey.....can I grade those bands or what!!..ha ha

So what were the other two upgrades?

    3+1=4...

On the other hand, I have 3 buffs and a Washington in at PCGS right now... maybe this is a good sign image

    Airplanenut,

    My question is more specific.

marcalan84 points out that his 1928 and 1935-D Buffalos upgraded, but doesn't state what the remaining Buffalo or the single Washington upgrade was.

  • The other 2 upgrades were more insignificant as far as $ value gained....so I didn't mention them. They were a 1935 Buffalo from MS64 to MS65 and a 1954-D Wash. Quarter that went from MS65 to MS66.

Sorry for the omissions...but I was much more excited about the others. I was trying to get a few coins regraded....but had to submit all 18 at once....and had to fill out the submission with coins that I knew didn't have much of a chance. I am not dissapointed with how it turned out with two exceptions. I thought that one of the 51-S Lincolns is an easy MS67RD. I also submitted a nice 34-D Washington Quarter that is in an MS64 holder that I think should MS65 (but after two tries...maybe I need to quit trying). Marc

  • How many times should a person try to upgrade a coin before giving up? 2? 3? Should it be based on the value of the coin if it upgrades (seems obvious that it would)?

  • I get to pick the coins up at the Post Office today. It is only 6 weeks to the day after I handed the submission to PCGS at Long Beach show on June 3rd (The day I sold my Lincoln Collection at the Heritage Auction).
