High End Coins. I Don't Get It

Sometimes the difference in price between a 69 and a 70 can be thousands of dollars. Even the difference between an MS64 and an MS65 can be tens of thousands (look at the 25-S Peace dollar as an example).

I don't get that.

Now, the difference in price between a FA02 and a PO01?

That I understand...

Its a function of prestige and status in many cases, but for some its still the individual merits of the coin.
For most collectors its a combination of both. If they tell you otherwise they are lying.
I fall into the category of both the prestige of having the grade and having a acceptable quality coin in the holder. Each collector has different thresholds of what is acceptable and what is not.
I think with the advent of superb coin photography and the improvements in computer digital capacity, the sight unseen market for quality coins has been pretty much obliterated. I think we are returning to the merits of the coin.

    It's a bragging rights thing.

The only time I'd worry about getting the one after the jump is if I were putting together a "minimum grade" set. For instance. A MS65RD 1954-P cent could be had for $50-$70. A 66RD would run $400+. If I wanted all my shortset coins to be 66RD or better, I'd go ahead and pay the premium.
