Is the doubling on this Merc worth a premium?

I just noticed this - if it's not worth a premium, no big deal, it's pretty cool looking regardless. It's ANACS XF40.

Machine doubling, no premium, but I really like those kind of things.

You will notice the typical characteristics of machine/mechanical doubling, as it is flat and shelflike and lacks split serif separation., otherwise it looks like a nice and sharp 26-?. Thanks for sharing it.

Not worth a premium... you'll be (something'd) to know that we saw a slide of that exact (or one with identical doubling) at the ANA in our grading class to see machine doubling image

That's what I was presuming, but I don't know much about the subject. Brian, it's a Philly.

You will see this type of flat and shelflike doubling on alot of Mercs in the 20's especially due the poor quality of the minting process during that time.
Unfortunatly and relatively speaking, this series is not as riddled with die varities as the Lincoln Cents and Jefferson Nickels, but there are some goodies to lookout for. I recommend you secure a copy of the Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes by David Lange( NGC finalizer). It will detail what to lookout for with nice photos. It is available through the ANA and the Brooklyn Coin Gallery.

What the others said. That is quite dramatic, however, and still cool. image

no premium? I think it's worth a small premium. I'd pay a small premium.

    Interesting!
