Do you ever find yourself talking too much about coins?

I've known people that were so talkative about their own interests (bowling, money, women, scientific research...) that it was unpleasant to be around them. Some people just aren't able to sense when they are being annoying!

Anyway, I try not to talk about coins too much with my friends. I let them ask me questions, and then I give concise answers. This (hopefully) has prevented anyone from thinking of me as always wanting to dominate the conversation.

I'm just curious. Are you careful regarding the amount of time you spend discussing coins? Not just for security reasons, but because you don't want to bore others?

I figure I'll usually bore them anyway--once I get to saying anything that only my mind can (sometimes) understand, I start mumbling to get out of it... if I talk about coins, no mumbling image

It never ceases to amaze me that not everyone is as interested in coins as I am. When I bought a 1796 no pole (Heritage, 2000, Fine-15 PCGS) half cent, it was, to me, the opportunity of a lifetime. More people I told about this acquisition were astonshed about the price, not that it:
    had no pole (so what?)
was R-7 with 13-20 specimens known
one of the very few slab-able circulated no poles
is one of the most famous rarities in the entire US coin series.

  • That's something, Rays! I'd want to talk about that, too. Do you have a scan of it?

Sometimes when I am tired of talking of coins, I just sit and think about them. Between the talking and thinking, that pretty much accounts for my time.

My wife has said that about me too. I have learned that there are good times and bad times to talk about coins. The bad times usually end up with the above statement to be true. But most of time when I talk to my wife about coins it is very productive and good.

I generally avoid mentioning coins. I have found that most non-collectors don't care...unless they have some junk Morgans they think are worth a fortune.

Yes. Very few people I know could care less about them unless they have a small stash that they want to know about. I'll talk at my wife about coins and she'll patiently tune me out.

Unless I'm here, across the street (or on another coin furum) at a coin store or show, I don't talk about coins - period.

I don't believe the average person thinks about coins other than as a financial medium and really couldn't care a squat about a rare coin.

If someone actually opens the subject up, I'll answer as accurately as possible without going into a long diatribe about my hobby.

    Just the way I am.

If a friend or co-worker is foolish enough to ask 'how's your little collection doing' or "what's new with accented hair Kennedys" then they had better not been on their way to the bathroom.image

I usually don't unless someone asks me about them.
  • What you mean we're allowed to talk about them !!!!

Most people I know arn't realy interested in coins so they ask how's the collection going, but as soon as you start to tell them they get bored. And the only time they show any real interest is when they want you to tell them how much some junk coin they found is worth.

I wont talk to them about coins if they wont talk to me about golf. I would rather chase little coins than little balls !!!!
  • At my new job, I happened to start with and now sit next to a guy that collects. He collects mostly currency now. Unfortunately, his daughter spent his original collection about 10 years ago. Those stories always make me cringe.

That's why I come here. Here people don't mind and they have the same problem. I don't have to worry about boring anyone and I get to hear some interesting discussions. When I talk to people in the real world I warn them that I am a fanatic and that I have a tendency to get carried away, so if it happens just tell me to shut up and I will.

Rays, SUPER half cent!, but at 13 -20 known it is an R-6 not an R-7. (Number that are slabbable could be R-7 but copper specialists usually really don't care about that. Most would rather it not be slabbed.)

Yeah. I try not to bore the poor average people too much. That glazed-over look they get in their eyes is all too familiar. That's the beauty of this place- I can gab all I want to and still not monopolize the forums, except maybe on the detecting forum, which is getting more active but is still a little slower than the other boards.

Shoot, my incessant chatter turned off the folks at the eBay coin board, and they WERE coinpeople! I had to learn to shut up a little, post less and read more, but it was a good lesson, and I learned some stuff from the people there. That chatboard is WAY too slow, though.

The CU forums rock. Thank you to the folks who provide it for us.
