Poll: What is the relative value of your collection compared with your house?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
With the talk about pricey coins like the 1870-S half dime, and the "seriousness" of collectors, I thought this poll would be interesting to see how "serious" (or crazy) we really are. The poll keeps your answer anonymous, but feel free to comment, if you like.

  • We are an active family and I have kids 14,12 and 8 years old. Our house is a place to sleep and hold our material goods. My house is 3 bedrooms and has a market value around 150,000 -175,000. It is totally paid for. I also have no loans and pay the credit Card off every month. I am not bragging but after a serious illness 6 years ago our perspectives changed. I collect coins for fun and spend only what I can afford. If it ever gets to be a burden or not fun I will sell my collection. I try and involve my kids in the hobby so one day they can take over. My other big Hobby is fishing and that cost more than coins could ever. I will be 40 in a month so who knows over time I may still change Hobbies but for now I have enough.

It used to be closer to about 80%, no after all of the stuff that happened this year, its closer to 14%.
,but still, its the knowledge that one retains and the overall quality of the collection.

20% of the properties I own but 400% of the one I live in.
Go figure. I may be more serious than I thought.image

Gee Barry, what a great time for this post,

As lloydmincy, one of our new members put it yesterday,

“You are just jealous. YOU are so concerned about what kind of person the new 1870-s owner is. Just like so many jealous Americans that live vicariously by buying People Magazine and complain about Donald Trump, or Tom Cruise or Jennifer Lopez or Tiger Woods.”

I guess I will defend my Honor,

My home is $6,000,000 and my coin collection is perhaps $300,000, so 5%.
I just like to keep my hobby in perspective.

Oh, and I apologized for being cranky, but I never said I was poor !

If we all agree on every subject here, PCGS might just as well close the forum down.

  • My collection is worth about 15% of what my house cost, and $5000 more than my car cost!

I don't waste too much money on houses and cars! lol

I like Dan's way of expressing it..

In my case, the coin collection is ~25% the value of my house and 5,000% (50X) the value of my car.

My ratio changed dramatically last year when I sold my Morgan Registry set (100% complete, including varieties) and paid off my house. Life is sweet with zero debt!
    When in doubt, don't.

2,000% .... is that serious enough? image

Why pay lots of property taxes when you can buy more coins?!!! image
  • I hope my wife doesn't find out.

I still do not have nor have ever had a house. I have moved 6 times in the past 5 years. I'm about to move again!

Well, seeing as how our house is going to be demolished tomorrow, I can't put a percentage on it. I have a beat up bent 1921-S Morgan that is worth more than the house will be worth tomorrow.

  • Neat idea for a poll question Barry image

Helped me realize that I either have too many coins or not enough house.

If it were up to my wife, we would have more house and less coin. Fortunately, I have some say in the matter. image

I like tradedollarnuts answer, and he is RIGHT!!!!!!!!

Barry, do you want to know collection vs. the VALUE of the house (houses) or EQUITY???????

vs. value of houses, 200%. vs. equity, 1000%!!!!!!

Even if TDN's coins are worth 20 times what his house his - I've seen a few of his coins posted, which would lead me to believe his house is still freakin nice image
