Turnaround times between PCGS and NGC and the relationship to the bottom line.

We see a lot of discussion about the tying up of inventory at PCGS because of the long turnaround and how this impacts a dealer's bottom line and cash flow. This is frequently cited as a good reason to submit to NGC. Afterall, the faster one can turn inventory, the better. Makes sense.
But, does the faster turnaround compensate for a three-fold value difference?
1964 NGC PR69CAM Kennedy - $93.
1964 PCGS PR69CAM Kennedy - $303.
Now, before anybody says it, this is not an isolated example. There are many just like this every week in the early date Kennedy halves in proof, SMS and business strikes. I wonder is it really worth more speed to leave that kind of money on the table?
I'd also note two other things. I'm not trying to pick on Marty, he was just handy. And, this is not a slam on NGC. Frankly, this disparity creates a lot of excellent buying opportunites.

Patience is a virtue unless its hundreds or thousands of dollars in a potential single grade upgrade or designation. So, there is really not a clear cut answer. Its very esoteric.
<< <i>I had a very crappy scan of that coin. I'm waiting for the lens adaptor for my camera. A better picture would have brought better bids.. >>
That was what I was thinking, too--the second auction's picture looked more CAM, even if they are the same level of contrast in real life.
Hmmm, another one!
Still cheap
The range here isn't that much. Now I know why Russ is buying them up on Teletrade and selling them on E-Bay!!!
I don't think the image had anything to do with it. Check Skytyr2's auctions. His images generally suck, and you'll frequently see the same disparity in the sales prices between his PCGS material and his NGC material.

But, you have to be very selective buying them on Teletrade. There are a couple major dogs listed right now that I wouldn't buy with your money.

Yeah, that's a CAM.

You should buy this one.
Or, maybe this one.
Somebody at PCGS really likes that submitter.

I think you brought up an excellent point. When I pick up items for re-sale, I have to decide if its worth submitting to maximize the return money vs the time involved. Then, deciding what service is best for the specific coin in mind. It depends on several factors.
I usually send the higher dollar stuff, better date, semi key, PQ stuff to PCGS that would greatly benefit from being under that plastic at 15 days vs ANACS which is extremely fast 5 days, but may not bring as much on the price realized end.
the big decision: Is it worth tying up funds on certain items for several weeks more, yes if the return is potentially a lot higher?
Isn't a NGC PF69CAM is still worth more than a PCGS PF68CAM?
I think so. That's the real advantage with NGC, and why they bring less.
NGC is not always right.
Just had a NGC 66CAm half come back 68CAm at PCGS (Cracked it out).
On the other hand had a tough date cameo in NCG 65 Cam, and I can't get it back in a 65 cameo holder at any service. (NGC or PCGS is all I use).
JMHO!

That assumes that a PCGS PR68CAM would grade PR69CAM at NGC.

Nor is PCGS.

You are correct, but I see more gifts in NCG holders than PCGS holders!
