1885 canadian nickel mint error?

Is this a mint error? Or has this coin just been beat like a rented mule? I would have thought it was just a well worn coin until I saw the extra metal piled on the queens face like that. It is also very pitted, and you can see a tiny hole drilled in the coin as well. It looks like they just drilled through an already existing pitted point.

Thanks for your opinions,
Zulan

    Hi,

I see what you mean, the extra metal on the face doesn't seem to be caused by a dent on the reverse. I have no idea.

I see what you mean, too, but it could be bubbled from heat or something. My guess is that it's a damaged coin and not a true error.

(BTW- it's a five-cent piece. There ain't no nickel in it.) image

I agree with CCG -- it looks like it was the subject of a high school chem/phys lab experiment. It's not a natural error.
