What would you do?

I saw a request on the bst for an offer to buy coins in a certain series.
I sent him a scan of the obverses and quoted a price. After I sent the requested scan of the reverses he
wrote back to say he would take the lot and included his address. Then at the end of that message he says he will withhold
payment until the coins arrive so he can make sure I "got them all right".
I told him I will not start a business transaction with an element of distrust - even if it was one-sided.
I told him to check my eBay feedback and after he had done so I hoped to hear back from him. No Response.

I apologize if this is the wrong venue for my question.

    Pass.

  • Pass on this guy. Sounds like he's just window shopping. There's lots of other reasonable people who will purchase your coins.

Sell when you get money. I had someone just fail to send $1200... glad I didn't ship those out...

    What they said.

Aside from the fact that he insulted you with the patronizing statement about waiting to see "if you got them all right", it's always best for the buyer to send the money first.

Unless it's somebody you're familiar with.

I have several trades workin' right now, and two or three people have sent me coins without seein' my money. Might nice of 'em. Guess I'd better get busy with the checkbook!

Aside from one nervous incident (which turned out OK in the end), I have never gotten burned by anybody here.

I'm with the others - I would pass too. My might consider going through Ebay with a "Buy it now" for the agreed on price. You tell the buyer the minute you put it out there and he buys it before it even makes the general listing (so no risk of somone else swiping it). Then you at least have some protection and recourse if something goes wrong. Someone else on the boards suggested this.

Before we jump to any conclusions, I would note that boyhowdy just joined this forum and we have no idea how long the other party has been a member or what their reputation is.

I'd have to concur. I've been making purchases from board members, and as a newb I wouldn't venture out and purchase from anyone who hasn't been here awhile or from someone a member didn't back 100%. On the other hand I've also sold to one member but did so through a PayPal invoice to insure some integrity.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

If you are going to sell coins, you have to have your own rules. When I was at Heritage back in the dark ages, there was no way we would send a coin to anyone on approval on the first deal unless the person was REALLY REALLY upstanding and we ran his ss number, checked references etc etc etc.

It was made known to the salesman that if we were ripped off, it was up to the salesman to go and GET the coin back or pay for it although I'm not sure what would have really happened if that happenedimage

I left "the firm" almost 15 years ago and went into business for myself and my rule is no approval on the first deal. These are my marbles. If you want to play with them, you have to pay me in advance. I will give a return within a 48 hour period of your signing if you really convince me that this is even necessary but that is it. After a deal or two we will see if we even start to bond and take it step by step.

Some people don't like it and that's fine. You can't be all things to all people at all times. I deal in quality material and I definitely don't like to waste either mine or someone elses time. So the deal has to be straight on both ends or there's no chance of it happening.

The results over this almost 15 year period is over 90% of the people who did business with me then ( as well as before then), still do business with me. Relationships have formed, and in almost all cases we all have a future together which is obviously a substantive part of life that goes beyond just buying and selling coins.

You may feel differently about what you can and can't do, will, won't etc. It's an individual thing obviously. It takes time and sometimes it isn't easy, but if you stick it out, it becomes a really nice part of life indeed.

    Good luck

For what it's worth, I know this poster because I imaged some of his coins. He is a good guy. However, some people here might not know him and want to be cautious. This is where you furnish references.

Tough situation since you're new here. As a seller I probably wouldn't send first.

If I really wanted to do the sale I might ask someone I know who's been here awhile (K6AZ) to receive both coins and money
    and exchange them.

    Just an idea.

New member or old member, what does it matter?
If you wanna buy coins you pay first.
Name this con weasel that wants to buy your coins but doesn't want to pay you so we can stick a spit up his arse and roast him till we smell his fat sizziling on the coals!

I would have to know someone really well to send coins out before they paid.

I think the guys out of line just asking.

It isn't important who the member is. I'm new too and if I made a faux pax I would want to be advised gently.

I am more interested in how the older guys and gals would deal with the seller. The replies suggest to me that my
    radar was pretty close.

My eBay name is sjt*ucla. My one neg. came as a buyer as I would not let a seller bait-and-switch me.
