Baltimore report

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Just got back home from Baltimore and had a good show.

First thing I did was view some of the coins in the B&M auction today
(I'm bidding on some Seated Dimes via Internet tonite). Highlight of
the auction coins was holding in my hands and viewing the 1873-CC No
Arrows Seated Dime. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it is a
unique coin, all the other 1873-CC dimes having arrows at the date
(and even so, the 73-CC arrows is a key date in the series) and was
the LAST coin to finish Eliasberg's collection. It's in an NGC MS65
holder and looks spectacular, like a presentation piece. It last sold
in 1999 for $632K. In case you're wondering, no, I am not bidding on
it image

After viewing some auction pieces, I started my tour up and down the
aisles. The bourse wasn't particularly crowded. Chatted with a few
dealers when the action was slow. Looked at a few coins that were
outrageously priced, and passed on those. One of these days, prices
will come back to reality. I bought 4 coins, which is more than I can
recall from any show in the last couple of years, as I have very
specific coins I look for. Specifically, picked up an 1814 S of A
dime XF45, an 1828 small date dime XF40, an 1875-CC (below) dime VF,
and the highlight, a 1793 Wreath cent PCGS F15, pictured below. It's a very nice, smooth planchet, with some scattered, small pits. Overall, I think it's a very nice coin. If you want to play guess the grade (it's in a PCGS green label slab), go ahead, and I'll post the grade later tonite, or in the morning.

What happened to the lunch meeting? I was by the entrance to the hall about 12:25, and waited there 10-15 minutes. Nobody else showed up. I wound up having lunch with a good friend of mine from RCC. We went to the pub across the street - good fish and chips and beer!

I guess PCGS F15. And there is no need to post the grade later since you already have done so.

I could say, "Boy, are you guys dumb. You fell for it. You think I'd post the real grade in a guess the grade?"

But... I blew it. Oh well. Maybe I should post one of the Bust Dimes (how about the XF45) and play guess the grade on that one image
  • great seeing forum members tootawl, jrgman, ksteelheader, tiger and tonelover at the show. Good luck on the peace dollars tiger! nice seeing that 1893-s Morgan! Right next to Jon's table was that million dollar MS68 1792 half disme. I held it in my hands! Only bought one coin, a modest 1913 Buffalo T1 in 63 for my type set.
One less hall open and that many less dealers and overall a little disappointed in the quality of the coins but had a great time meeting forum folk for the first time!

That looks like it is in an old rattler holder... am I right?
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Not a rattler as far as I can tell. Just a green label slab.

BTW, where did you guys meet? How did I miss you?

Are Ira Stein and Angel Dee's there? When they were here in Milwaukee for the CSNS show, I think I slimed their cases with my drool! Too many high-grade wheats and nowhere near enough $'s in my pocket! The guy at Angel Dee's put up with my "browsing" and was very helpful but the guy at Ira's table (not Ira) was not very friendly to me, even though I was the only one at the table at the time.

It was Saturday afternoon, so maybe he'd had enough!! Great inventory, though!!

Goose - Yes, that's it, as that's who I bought it from. I didn't even think to inquire about using a credit card. I would have preferred it to add to my miles total. Guess they need to catch up and take the auction off Ebay.

Coppernicus - I saw Angel Dee's table. It was pretty crowded when I walked by. I also ran into Ira Stein, who is just walking the floor looking for coins (and was fairly disappointed at the time I spoke with him), no table.

Thanks for the report Barry. I'm glad you got to at least hold one of your dream pieces and pick up a few nice coins.
