Can You Identify This Card?

This PSA graded Mantle was part of a large quantity of 1968 Topps cards I picked up recently. Its in a PSA holder but also includes a Topps logo in the flip. I've never seen this type of card/holder before. Any information on its origin and value would be appreciated. Thanks!

hmmm Some type of promo? Or maybe a "thought" up idea that did not come to fruitation. Isnt another "grader" doing this? Putting "swatches" in with graded cards?

  • I'll try looking for more info, but I believe these were a redemption from Topps. I think they inserted redemptions for 1952-1969 Topps Mantle's into their products (2003 Topps?), and this is what was redeemed.

  • Yeah, I think it was either in 2002 or 2003... it might have even come as a box topper in some of their releases.

Hmm....doesn't look like it's even worth keeping, just ship it to me and I'll get rid of it for ya.image But really, that's a nice card.

<< <i>I saw one like that on auction a few weeks ago! I forget what the description said about it. It's nice! >>

i think the one you saw was a 1969 PSA 8.. but it had the same "Topps" holder.. i saw the auction too.. i couldnt find it on a completed items search, though..

from the psa "verify cert" link:

    CARD INFORMATION
    Year: 1968
    Brand: TOPPS
    Player: MICKEY MANTLE
    Variety: N/A
    Grade: 7

Interesting that no 'variety' is given, nor a special disclaimer. Must be a topps promo as stated above.

  • FYI -- I also sent off an email to PSA -- Here is their reply: "Topps had a program where they bought back vintage Mantle cards and put
a genuine piece of a vintage Mantle bat in a custom made label - this is a limited edition Topps product -they used us for the
    authentication/grading of the card."

Thank you everybody for the additional info!

  • I sold one of these for a buddy of mine a few weeks back. These were buy backs
from the first year of Topps Tribute. You sent the redemptions in and got back a
random graded Mantle. My buddy got a PSA 7 1968 and a PSA 5 1959 AS. These
redemptions were selling for $700 to $800 on eBay. My buddy wished now he
would of unloaded instead of sending them in. Topps did not do a very good
    job with this redemption program.

I'm not familiar with '68 Topps. In fact, I have very few raw '68s as well - but those bottom corners, especially the right one, don't look very 7ish. Is that common for these cards, due to the non-white border?

  • Mark,

I can only guess that since it takes minimum of 2 MINT corners to get a PSA 8, it takes a minimum of 2 NM-MT corners to get a 7. The top 2 corners both appear to be NM-MT.
