Question about PSA/DNA

I have a photo I want to get certified, it's a dual signature. It's a 12x14 photo, matted and framed. How does PSA/DNA handle this. Do I need to take it out of the frame? Do they charge for both signatures? Also, what about GAI's service, as good, not as good? Thanks Guys

Chad

  • You may want to read this before you send to PSA/DNA

  • Hey,

Anybody have a link to the Fox News story quoted in the link above? I was thinking about sending some football 3X5's to them for authentication...but am thinking twice after reading that statement from the IADA-CC.

WOW that isnt good, I am having second thoughts. James Spence credibility is fading with that story.

It worries me too, as I have some items that were purchased because of the PSA COA.

Well, I decided to do some digging on this and I can't find that article (Fox News) anywhere. Not via google, not on the Fox News site nothing...

I did find a few other anti-PSA/DNA articles on the IADA-CC site though.

    Autopen Authenticated by PSA/DNA

    Auction Item In Question

The top article doesn't bode well for PSA/DNA, the bottom starts to redeem them. I don't have an opinion either way but provided the links to the articles I found that might be of interest.

I was thinking about having an 8x10 signed by Ted Williams & Joe Dimaggio authenticated by them. I am fairly certain both auto's are real based on reading I've done but after what I paid for it and after the authenticating cost ($300 IIRC) I would be out a lot more if they were fake....so I decided to leave it on my wall without being absolutely certain. I figure I like the looks of it anyway so if it's a fake oh well, my kids can find out when I'm dead. For now, I enjoy looking at it and that's all that matters.

Looks to me like the PSA/DNA info from the home page has changed dramatically over the last few days. Could be coincidental. As for the previous link and negs about the credibility, they used to offer opinions for a nominal fee, but I don't see that there anymore. Opinions used to be somewhat instantaneous. Authentication is another matter (taking 20 day turnaround). Spence is highly regarded and actual authentications are highly scrutinized for content and computer imaging is used from "real" autographs and laid over images from submissions.

I don't think it is fair to bash away basis a self serving trade notice and unfounded media article that may have been based on "opinion" versus actual authentication. I am getting about 30 articles togehter to send to them and have no issue with proceeding.

Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • I betcha a signature done with an auto-pen would lay over a computer image just dandy.

an 8x10 signed by Ted Williams & Joe Dimaggio authenticated by them

Envoy, why don't you have GAI authenticate that photo. It's $35 and comes with matching serial #s on the sticker and COA. It's $35 per auto item; not sure what they charge for dual signatures. I sent them 3 autoed 8X10 hockey and all 3 were deem bogus. They were kind enough not to charge me the $105 for the 3 items. I thought that was pretty cool and classy. It was my first venture with autograph material, and they told me not to give up over the phone, but I doubt I will get into signed memorbilia now.
  • EEK.. Do you think I'd need to take the photo out of the frame. I really hate to, it's a professional job with matting and tape on the back. I know the answer, but do you think a COA would double the price. What I have is a Elway/Marino dual signed photo.

    Chad,
If your looking to sell it, I think GAI or PSA/DNA would increase it's value over ebay. You could consider consigning it to an auction house that uses PSA/DNA, they would have it authenticated. Also, if you just want it done and plan on keeping it, PSA/DNA does do some shows, find one and have it done on the spot, then you'd probably be able to keep it in the frame.

<< <i>then you'd probably be able to keep it in the frame. >>

    Hi Abe
Here is the acceptance note by PSA - I think they would require a pic to be removed from the frame to authenticate - not just because of mailing as such but the authentication process - the glass enclosed item will probably keep them from properly inspecting the item IMO.

    << <i>ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED
PSA/DNA cannot authenticate all items due to handling and space limitations. The following submissions are not accepted:

Framed Items - All items must be removed from the frame before submission to PSA/DNA.
Heavy Items - Items that weigh over 30 lbs. are not accepted.
Large Items - Items such as large trophies, plaques, pictures, guitars, and odd shaped items may be accepted. You are required to call our office to confirm acceptance before any submission. >>

I'm with Dirty Harry on this in general - there has been in-fighting amongst the different authenticators for years - and I get confused - bottom line - they all are relatively good at this and no one is perfect - they will make mistakes - but if you are going to sell the items, a PSA/DNA COA e.g., will make the sale easier and get you more money from my reading experience.

I didn't know GAI was so cheap for the authenticating. I'll have to look into that. I have a few "in-person" 8x10's I'll have to have them do as well since it's that cheap.

As for the PSA/DNA cert, it absolutely helps the value if only because of the "piece of mind" it gives the buyer. I wasn't bashing them at all, just posted a couple of links for everyone to see. Nothing more, nothing less. No ill intent.
