From the wild...pretty rare. I have been looking for clipped for many years...If you started buying them it should be pretty easy. Mabye you can convince NGC to grade them in a single holder too...Thats a pretty neat idea!

If your "from the wild" clause means from out of circulation, then I wish you luck. Your chances would be slim to none. Try finding any 1978 Ike dollar in circulation, let alone one with a clipped planchet. The half and the dollar would be tough to find, and to find clipped ones of a specific date "in the wild", well, I would say the odds are so slim as to be nearly impossible.

But not totally impossible. I just sold a Bicentennial Ike with two clipped planchets that came out of an original roll. If that roll had somehow made it into circulation this late, somebody could have made themselves a $50 cherrypick.

If you try to put together a set of clipped 1978 coins by buying them, then I would say it can be done. Might take a little while, but it would certainly be possible. It's an interesting idea.

Your odds of getting the rest of the set from the wild are slim to none. You probably have the cent & dime but the nickel & quarter are tough but the sure nuff stopper will be the JFK.
You won't find any dated 1978 in circulation anyway but if you looked through lots & lots & I mean lots & lots of bags & rolls you might find a nickel or maybe a quarter. JFKs are tough because the mintage was low and the errors are easily spotted on the big coins & saved.
And yes, I have a complete set of incomplete planchets as well as most of the error types from all denominations from a certian year.

    Why 78? Birth year set?

Naw, atarian is too young to have 1978 as a birthyear. image

I think he picked the date because he's already found two clipped coins from that date.

How do you know your finds are genuine clips, and not just coins someone was screwing around with?

I agree with others, if by "from the wild" you mean finding them in a roll or circulation, good luck. If you meant "from the goodness of the hearts of other board members," then I may be able to help you out. image

Please post which two denominations you already have. I'm certain I have the cent and dime myself, and it is possible I have a quarter or nickel as well, I'd have to dig for them. The Ike is actually seen more frequently than the half, I've seen two or three clipped '78 Ikes on eBay in the last year, I can't remember the last time I saw a clipped '78 half. If you decide to complete the set the old fashioned way - by buying them - I have a decent network of clip collectors at my disposal, I can send a notice out "on the wire" for you.

P.S.: To Xpipe's point - there are deceiving forms of damage around, if your clips came from circulation it is possible they're not Mint errors - post a couple of clear scans and about 95% of the time I can give you a positive attribution.
Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.
