another question about autographed balls

I have a friend who collected autographed baseballs (as well as cards) about 25 to 35 years ago. I was looking through the 75 or so balls the other day (he is thinking about selling them now). I saw what you might expect: Nolan Ryan, Mickey Mantle, Maris, Aaron, Whitey Ford, and so on...

Then I came to what I suspect will be the real find (as if the others aren't). A ball signed by Hank Greenburg.

Does anyone know the value of a Hank Greenburg autographed baseball? I can't recall ever seeing one for sale.

oh, I was thinking it might be worth a little more than that, but then again, I have never bought an autograph that old

Greenberg died in '86 - so he got to sign a lot of stuff over the years - was inducted in the HOF in '56 I believe - that means a lot of people were chasing him for his auto for a lot of years. Also, not sure how strong the demand is for his auto. I like him! Great slugger who lead the league in HR's a few times. Wasn't he implicated in spying stuff during WWII?

I don't know a lot about him, other than he is in the HOF, and one of the greatest prewar sluggers.
  • Jon and Stone,

The August SMR puts a SS Hank Greenburg ball at $1,500.00. There was one in the last Mastronet auction that closed at $1,044.00. I don't know how yours compares to that one but if I were you, I would get it to PSA/DNA for authentication. image

I didn't bother to use the smr since he didn't have a psa/dna auth. ball - that's good to know that if he would take the time to have the ball authen., it would jump in value from 600 to 1500$ And one selling for 1K aint bad. BTW, the source for the 600 value is the Standard Catalog and Tuff stuff which are actually both Krause, so in essence, the same source.

So why wouldn't a Mel Ott auto be worth a lot more since he died in the late 1950's?
  • Spigrimace,

Mel Ott is worth more (BV of $28,500 more to be exact!). Mel Ott auto's are exceedingly rare and sought after (his SS Ball sold for $45,960 in that same Mastronet auction). image

I believe you're thinking of Moe Berg of "The Catcher Was a Spy" fame.

I believe Hank Greenburg missed a few seasons due to his military service.

the ball I saw is not quite as white as that one from the mastro auction, its just a touch lighter brown, but the overall condition of the ball is just as nice if not nicer
