Check out this repunched mint mark 2004-D

I found this 2004 - D Dime with a triple struck mintmark.



There is no other doubling on the lettering, date, or portrant. How can this happen?? If this were strike doubling thne the rest of the coin should show some signs of this also...right??

I'm not sure what it is. Mint marks are on the galvanos used to make the master hubs so it cannot be a RPM.

nwcs; thats what I thought also. But this does'nt look like any strike doubling I've ever seen, so how then??

Looks like strike doubling to me... I don't see a clear seperation of the serifs at all there...

George, the thing that throws me is that when there is strike doubling it is usually seen throughout the coin in the lettering or date. But this coin shows none of that and the strike is crisp with no thickness to any other areas of the coin. It may well be just strike doubling, I've just never seen it in such a limited area of a coin before.

Strike doubling can be confined to a very small area, such as a mintmark, and not appear in other lettering/devices ...

That looks like strike doubling by that pic. Yes you can have strike doubling show on some parts of the design and not on others.

Thanks RGL, I've just never seen strike doubling only affect such a small area and leave the rest of the strike without some sign of a bounce or rotation.

O-Well I guess I have'nt found the next wonder of the world LOL. But I did get to post the first pic using my new microscope.
