Jessica Lynch coins... not really worth the price!

I have noticed literally hundreds of these Jessica Lynch coins all over the place, and don't believe they will have any real value in the years ahead. To me it seems rather short term. Don't get me wrong Jessica Lynch should be recognized but only to the point that the rest of our soldiers are. It is unfortunate that she suffered the experiences she did, but to place her signature on a coin slab makes absolutely no sense to me, I just think the signature of the person on the slab should have some relationship to the coin or purpose for the signature... unless she was a POW during the Lewis and Clark adventure she should not be signing a Jefferson nickel slab. It just underminds the other POW's who truly suffered and didn't join the POW for Profit program. I trust PCGS paid her for each signature.

  • Well when people will spend $300+ for a non-silver top pop current Roosevelt dime, getting a
MS66 nickel for $75 starts to sound like a deal to me.
Have you seen the prices people are paying for MS66 nickels nowadays?
Heck PCGS might even make it a new variety to collect in the registry sets.

    That would be my guess.

Yes it is very silly! Just another marketing ploy and I could not agree with you more. As a matter of fact signatures on coin slabs are silly when they exploit the original purpose of the coin. i wonder how the mint would feel about this? Just my opinion......
  • If you think about it, the mint has been doing it too.
Commemoratives, mint sets, silver mint sets, proofs, silver proofs, special mint sets, uncirculated mint sets,
first day covers, coin and currency sets, various bullion coins in uncirculated and proof formats.
Then we have rolls, bags, large bags, boxes and cases too.
Jewery, money clips, and what nots.

If ther ever was a flash in the pan, this is it. These coins will be worthless after awhile, IMHO.

$300? There are some that command many multiples of that sum and several of us would be "chopping at the bit" to buy any when they are offered. Clad Roosies are a very underated series IMHO - they are several scarce issues in superb gem FB.

Would agree with Mitch there...Roosies are one of the sleeping series of today. Don't know when they will catch fire, but it will happen. Just look at Jeffersons. they get a TON of respect now, compared to two years ago, and 10 years ago, etc. For those who are upset by the high prices of so many series...Roosies may be the right place to be. Of course, you have to accept collecting one of the least attractive coins ever minted...

Now see, there is the rub of collecting. What to one may be ugly, is to another something else. I must say I never thought much of the Washington Quarter before the State thingie came along. This made me rethibk something I had felt for most of my life. So when you say a coin is ugly, that is the opinion of some, but not all. I can say the same about the V nickle, the SBA dollar, and for the Ike Dollar. Eye of the beholder, remember that. image

I did use a "+" sign there. Anyway, all these guys bidding up Roosies to near $1,000 pretty much convinced me they aren't a underated series anymore.

Apparently, everyone got bored with Silver dollars, so maybe the silver dollars is the underated series again.

"Don't get me wrong Jessica Lynch should be recognized..."

    Why?

"It's far easier to fight for principles, than to live up to them." Adlai Stevenson

  • The guy that started this thread has no clue as to what he's talking about.

You try and get MS-66's done. I bet you anything that you cant.

I submitted 1000's of coins for this project so far, $10's of thousands of dollars have been spent.

Now you tell me would you be willing to spend $15k on a PCGS invoice? Can you afford to do submissions at that level?

These are things you should take into account before bashing these coins the way you do.

I find it rather amusing that the people that can least afford it are the ones that talk the most sheit.

Same thing with the WTC coins I ran for almost 2 years. blood coins death coins, but hey you know what there were million of dollars sold, those people that bashed me guess what they too own those coins, and chances are they got some of my coins.

Same way with these nickels you may not like me, you may not like the Nickels, but face it they are top pops, and I will have a sell out. Heck I already sold 1000 Jessica Lynch coins, I'm going to submit 1800 more next week, and 3000 more right before Thanksgiving.
Now you tell me is it worth it? Heck yeah! My demand is far grater then the supply.

MrPlatinum, I understand the difficulty of obtaining nice grades and that high grades are indeed rare and are worth a premium. Trust me on this one. Can you explain to me what the F$%& Jessica Lynch has do do with the coins she has her name on? The media has rammed this down everyone's throat but do you think She is more important than the other people that have had wartime hardship or 911 hardships?
  • It was my idea to put her name on the Nickels, if you read where some of the money is going you'll understand that the money being raised is not for her, but for her foundation that helps children's education.

Correct me if I'm wrong, when was the last time donating millions of dollars for a worthy cause wrong?

This is another reason I got involved with this project.

Yeah I make a few bucks here and there, but hey this is a business for me and my family, you dont work for free now do you?

If so I need a hand moving about 1500 aquariums from one building to the other to re-plumb a new system.

We're expanding to over 4000 75 gallon aquariums by the end of August.

Yes I also wholesale tropical fish. (19 years)
  • I don't consider it exploitation for the Mint to offer the different sets, rolls and options for collectors. I have said it before and I'll say it again. If you don't like the coins, don't buy them. You may or may not know it, but there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of us that do appreciate the chance to purchase these products from the Mint. I'm off my soapbox for now, but this crap is getting old, fast!

This is fun man! MrPlatinum, I thought it was Miles' idea? i like the charity aspect of it and i rescind any harsh comments. it's fair that you make a few bucks, since you are putting out such huge $ and getting hammered in the bulk department.
  • DatentypeDatentype Posts: 1,677 ✭✭✭
  • It was Mile's idea to do the JL project It was my idea to make the 2004's meaning a total of 8 coins 6 Nickel set and 2 ASE's will complete the 2004 JL series.

So far so good I've sold out of my first run which was just over 1200 coins (less than 2 weeks)

I have a few for my eBay crowd, hopefully I'll get the next round faster than the first, I still have orders that have yet to be filled.

This is very interesting, as PCGS has a business, offers a forum, and has then had all their laundry, clean or dirty, aired on the forum. Any predictions upon the future of the dynamic marketing?
  • I dont know what the future will bring, I'll just keep selling great coins.

Seen the old car dealer ad where the salesman offers a car, than "air conditions" it with a sledge hammer?
Quite the businessman. You go guy! image
  • I got a cool idea, I'll just post a new coin with each post.

  • If I did this 40 times a day like Russiepooh, hum?

I wonder now much revenue this will create.

I bet this will start a new trend. Hey Russ 40 posts a day, I'll try to make the time to do what you do.
