Circulating Ikes

In my continuous effort to liquidate my coin collection, I went to sell my Ikes (and other crap coins) today to a small time buyer in town, but he didn't even want to look at them.

So, figuring I probably couldn't get too much more than face for them, on the bay of E, and not wanting to pay fees and shipping, I decided they would make great tip money.

Anyone else freely spend their Ikes?

Don't worry, I checked the 1972s for Type 2 and nice coins, which there are none.

I use Ikes for my restaurant tips. The waitresses get a real kick out of them. One of them even started collecting them by date. image
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!

Funny, I do exactly the same thing. I leave Ikes and Kennedy's for tips at restaurants all the time.

I sold all the extra business strikes I had on the bay of Eimage Now I only have my proof registry and a set of business strikes. That will do it for me on Ikes. Now to the next seriesimage

I bought three 1976 Ikes out of the till at a local ice cream parlor. I carried them around a bit, and then casually spent them as the need arose.

I have a coin dealer friend who has a back room filled with this kind of stuff -- well circulated Ikes (but not braddick material), bicentennial stuff, well worn wheaties, etc. Several hundred dollars worth of it -- maybe a thousand -- none of it worth appreciably more than face. I told him he should just spend it all, but I guess for some people that's like giving away the crown jewels.

Back in the '80's and '90's I walked into coin shops occasionally to find the proprieter
cutting up mint sets to use the coins as change in the cash register. A few would save
gems for me but this was pretty standard practice. Even today there are substantial
numbers of low grade mint set Ikes which will not sell for wholesale BU prices. Buyers
of these want nice choice rolls and will reject coins which are ugly because of marking
or weak strikes. This will include up to about 40% of some date Ikes in the mint sets
such as the '76 t I. These coins often end up being used as tips or taken to the bank.

  • I had thought about getting a set of good well worn IKE's and getting them slabbed.
I think it would be pretty neat to have a 100% collection of VG-VF rated IKES in the registry.
Considering that my good 100% complete collection is at the bottom even at 100%, having a VG rated
100% complete collection right next to it in the next slot would be nice too.
