1965 Topps Rose PSA – Is this card okay?

I bought this card off eBay and there are two things that are a bit odd. First, the front and back of the flip are off by about 1mm – the front is 0.5mm to the left and the back is 0.5mm to the right. Everything is firm and looks un-tampered so I think it got slabbed slightly off. The other thing is the back of the card is a bit darker then all of my other 1965 cards. It is in NM condition – nice corners, centering and edges just the back is slightly darker. Has anyone else experienced this?

Brian

edit to add no wonder why nobody ever replies to my pics!
This should be better:

  • They replaced your Rose with a Red X inside a white square inside a larger gray square. I'd return the card for a refund.
  • Flips off by 1 mm don't bother me. Unless its more than 1 Hm I wouldn't worry.

Brian, I've gotten cards that dark on the back-think they were probably exposed to smoke or dust for too long. The card itself looks fine. I can't see where the holder is off in that scan.

speaking of holders that are off , is it common for older holders , ones with the hollogram on the back , to be off on the sealing. I have a couple that the cards look fine and the holder looks fine but it's off. I have another from the same seller a while back that is off but the card is not as strong , I always had my doubts on the old one but seeing the new cards , I am thinking that maybe it is ok. any help would be appreciated! thanks
  • Thanks for the help Dave.

packCollector, my other older slabs look fine, but this one was slightly off however, the seal looks untampered and is firm. Perhaps over the years, they slabbed using better techniques. The only reason I mentioned any doubt was that I heard about that seller who altered PSA slabs - I'm not sure if I worded that right I know it's taboo to mention it.

A few months ago I posted about a couple slabs of mine being sealed oddly, but no one responded. One was a common, but one was a $100 card. After no response, I started thinking it was a conspiracy of silence. But I'm glad to read confirmation that it was a known problem and not a sign of tampering.

  • Beavis, I can't comment on the slab, but the backs of the '65s can come in a variety of shades of blue. I went through my set after I read your post and noticed that almost all of the ones I have in the set have nice backs like your Rose. I probably take that into account when buying. I have doubles that range from faded to light blue to having the entire range on one card.

What got me into the '65s was finding a stash of my mother's '64s and '65s back in the late 80's. Many of hers were faded, but she had kept them in an old Lipton teabag box and I don't know what kind of effect that had on the cards.
