1792 Half Disme in G-4: What's it worth?

Okay, I will fess up, there's one for auction at Scotsman later in July. It is the one auction company (located in St. Louis) where I have home field advantage. I am going to look at lots next week. What would you pay for a "typical" example?

I paid 4500 for a damaged VF coin ( about 10 years ago

Then 6500 for another, 8,000 for another, 15K for an ExF.

Haven't bought one for a while though...........

I have to believe it's a 5K coin. Ya think?

I will not be bidding on it, but I would think if it is average or better for the grade, it is at the very least a $6000 coin.

Am looking forward to seeing a picture of that coin.....would love to see sight-seen. The only Half Disme's I've seen are higher grade examples in the XF and better grade category (and significanty higher price category).....that coin is one of 4 that I will probably never acquire for my 1792-1964 (non-Gold) type set - the others being the 1796/97 Half, and the two Goebrecht Dollars.

Very cool.

Want to bet the reserve is close to $12,000? I'm not familiar with the auction company referenced. Do they have a catalogue with photos of the coin, or is it available to view on the internet?

at a grade of "g-4", that is not a bad coin at all. i don't think you should dismiss it outright

I looked at the coin today. It's not pretty, but it certainly is historic. The ultimate buyer will prize it because of what it is, not what it looks like.

Mrearlygold - I know your $18,000 estimate was tongue in cheek, but now that it went for that at the hammer with the juice pushing it over $20.000 where does that leave your predictive abilities. Come on tell us who will win the election? Is gold going higher or has it peaked? You are on a roll - is a book forthcoming?
