Football cards and air brushing

I must be slow... I just realized today that all the helmet logos are air brushed off the 1973 and 1979 cards I have. I'm sure it must have been a licensing issue. Does anyone know the story behind this? The helmets seem to be untouched in the 60s and 80s that I checked out.

  • all 1970's cards are airbrushed, i think they finally used logos after the '81 season. Topps didn't want to pay NFL Properties royalties for use of logos, so we get an entire decade of cheesy airbrushed helmets, and cheesy afros

Speaking of afros, I got a chance to catch a little of this action on PBS over the long weekend ...

  • ooh, the creepy, squeaky voiced mountain-painter-dude! him and Mr. Rogers always creeped me out when i was a kid.
  • Ah... so, basically 1970 through 1980 are all that way? And I am just now noticing this...

AND, I didn't know that Bob Ross was dead until a few minutes ago after doing a web search!

As goodriddance189 stated, 1969 and prior Topps has the logos.
1970 thru 1981 does not. From 1982 on they're back again.

Strangely, Fleer paid for the rights to use the logos on their Team Action cards,
from 1976 thru 1988, but didn't pay for the rights to put the player's names on the cards.

Hair brushing from 1973 to 1979 was indeed out of control in the NFL back then - especially with guys like John Riggins, Franco Harris, Fred Belitnikoff, and the list goes on. Ah, wait, you said "air brushing". Oh, never mind...
