A nice Nolan Ryan/Steve Carlton pull from a 73 pack

I won on ebay a 1973 GAI 9 opc pack from www.honestshawn.com

At first I was a little upset because I received a pack different from the
one pictured. So I decided to open it and found this card in the middle of
the pack.

It has 55/45 centering on the front and is 50/50 pinpoint centering on the back.
The front and back has no fisheyes and the registry is perfect.

Also in the pack was a PSA 8 Bench/Allen. It received an 8 only because of centering.

All other cards in the pack were not worth grading. These two stuck in the center
were the only two.

This was my favorite card from this year and was very happy to get it.
I saved the wrapper and wrote Ryan/Carlton on it so that I have it to go with the card.

Very nice pull! Even the rough cut on that card looks real attractive for the issue.

    Thanks Keith,

Can you open up this picture too ?

It shows the opc rough cut on the back better because
    of the black borders.

    Bingo!

If this ever comes up for sale, please let me know... I have a PSA 8 available in return.
  • question... how can a card with a rough-cut edge like that recieve a 9? I've been eliminating cards from subs based on this look thinking that it would drastically lower the grade (somewhat common in 82 Fleer & I have a few 72 Topps like that). So, based on this, it looks like a rough edge is not even considered a down side according to PSA?

rough cuts do not detract from the grade by psa standards. most opc's have rough cuts. when you get into years where a rough cut is an exception as opposed to the rule , I think it does factor into the grade though and you will probably get 1 grade lowere than expected

I love the rough cut look. To me it's not OPC without that rough edge. I think that 73 looks just as good as this

This is one of only a handfull of 81's that has pulled a 10
It's not mine by the way.

I was the first person ever to pull a 10 on a 1981 OPC card....it was Bob Boone, and it is still in my collection. Rough cuts are nice on OPC's, as long as they don't blunt the corners too much (which sometimes happens). Plus -- with a truly authentic rough cut, you can collect in high grade without worrying about trimming. In such ways, rough cuts can be your friend.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

The cards were cut believe it or not with airplane tension wire. The sheets were placed in small stacks and then the wire was tightened and snapped thru the cardboard.

You serious GasPipe?? That's a nice little piece of trivia for us OPC fans.
In the past two months I've opened up boxes of 81, 84, and 86 OPC. All but maybe twenty or so cards had the "Rough Cut". If I see an OPC without a rough cut it makes me go hmmmmmmmmm,,,, sheet cut??
Oh, and the 86's were the worst of them all.

The rough cuts just add to the natural eye appeal of this issue, IMO. Like someone pointed out, most OPC issues, especially those from this era, were cut using wire and OPC kep using the same wire until it was literally worn out. I'd be far more suspicious of a smooth cut on an issue like this, than a rough cut, and PSA does not penalize the rough cut when grading these cards, and rightfully so. I wouldn't apply this thinking, however, to 1972 Topps.

Edit: That is one awesome card!

Terry, how did you do on that 81 box? I think you bought it from me. I opened one box and sold the other, but now I'm wishing I busted that one too. I'm still waiting for grades on some from the first box, but I already got a Ryan 8 and two Schmidt 8s, all of which were sold and paid for the box (thanks mikeschmidt, hope you can get a bump on one of them).

I'd love to get my hands on some of those 73 boxes.

    Terry,
I was going to put together the set, but came to the realization that no matter how hard I tried, it might be 5 years before I come across another box or lot of OPC greybacks, and I didn't want to have a greyback/whiteback mixed set. I also abandoned my goal to build every OPC set from 78 to present because I know how long it will take to find decently centered examples of every card and that Id just end up eventually selling them for not nearly enough. There's a big high grade 70s-80s collection up on ebay now that includes the 81 greybacks. Just look in my ebay store (id feartheterps).
