Quarter guys...a little help please on this 1966

I dont know much about quarters, and this scan basically SUCKS...but i'll try to describe too. Also, the quarter doesnt have that brown line I'm talking about; thats from the scan and editing to pic to try to make it semi-presentable.

From the top of the forehead all the way thru the hair and down across the neck to the left of the braid on the outside side of Georges head is the area in question. That line and to the right is kind of raised, like a hump all the way along. There is no doubling I could see in any of the words on obverse or reverse or on the face/eagle or anywhere else that I could see with my magnifying lens. Just that area.

Is this an error of some sort, known or new? Rare or no biggie? Anyone ever seen anything like this? I dont think it's just from use over the years, but I dont know.

thanks. image

It appears to be mere tarnish. My guess would be that the coin sat face down in a few
drops of liquid which were pulled up the design by adhesion and then left that way for
a long time. Over time the substance caused tarnish where it was the proper thickness.
    Tempus fugit.
  • I thougth of that...but it's not a build up of any sort. Looking at the coin, it's definately some kind of delineation between the "normal" are to the left of the line and the "hump" on the right of it.

I'll try to take a better picture with my digital camera. that HP scanner SUCKS for coins.

I didn't read the original post closely enough. If it's actually raised then it seems
likely the material is still on it. It should come off in acetone.

  • I'm looking at the coin as we "speak". there is no build up. it's bare metal. Nothing to be removed...I'm positive of that.

Hell, I'll MAIL it to you if it cant be figured out by that lousy pic or a new digital pic if I can get a good one. image

It's nothing of value. Looks to be some sort of residue that is clearly post-mint.

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • guess my description and picture sucked too much.

it is definately NOT residue or build up of any sort. That line is there, on the quarter, just like a double die line(s) is there or some other minting error. But it's not really brown. that is the result of adjusting the picture for upload from a lousy scan.

The right side of the head, to the right of the line, is just as silver in "real life" and bare metal...normal, as the rest of the coin is. It just looks very strange.

Maybe i'll just send it in for the hell of it and see what happens.

    thanks anyways.

could it be some type of striking anomolie?
    maybe a damaged die strike?
    post-strike carvings?
    looks weird.

maybe the planchet wasnt annealed right and metal flow was restricted in those weak areas?

Send it to ANACS, pay the $6 and let them figure it out.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
