Fleer stamps-how to separate them for good grades?

I've picked up 82 Fleer Stamps that came 10 to a sheet. Question is, how to separate the nicer ones and still get a non-qualified grade.
The stamps I'm looking at have 1 or both perforations on the sides.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, I have a bunch of those that I bought in '82 & probably seperated then. It looks like I went through the perfs with a razor or knife. (can't honestly remember which I did)

    Did I leave anything out?
  • There are a few ways:

You can take a chance and manually separate them but you run the risk of tears and creasing the delicate stock. I have heard the best way to accomplish this is to use a ruler or straight edge and a scalpel on a hard surface. Razors will sometimes snag and ruin a stamp or two.

I have no problem with the straight edge/x-acto knife route...I spoke with Lee and he suggested actual cutting might be a no-no with PSA and grading. Of course the cards are marked hand cut, but do they want to see torn perforations or cut ones?
I'm practicing on some of the panels that came out a little messed up.
I want to add a couple of them to player sets and maybe add some nice ones to my own collection. So I want to be sure.
    Thanks for the input guys!

    hi ryan,
    this example is mint psa-9.
their were no razors or knives used to seperate this stamp. i have seen examples of OPEN perforated items that were cut and psa
was less than kind. thanks, lee

I remember that when PSA started grading Tiger Woods SI Kids cards, they specifically mentioned cutting was a no-no. As an ex-stamp collector, I would recommend folding the stamps flat at the perforation (gently of course), and then folding them the other way. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times in each direction, and then they should come apart quite easily. PSA will not count off if the tips of the perfs are slightly frayed (look at any mint stamp scan on eBay for examples). They may not grade them if the perf edges are too sharp (indicating cutting). Good luck!

Oops, just noticed the "..spoke with Lee" part. That is what happens when I spend all of my time typing and not enough reading. image

Lee - I'm sure it will be a "when" instead of an "if" about jumping into the Bench registry (although stumbling into the registry might be more like it). I do have one pretty cool Bench card to get me started (still raw).

No, I checked and the Card Saver is clean as can be. Why would it be stained?

All kidding aside, the Bench is beautiful (I have to get a new scanner, because my scanner is getting foggy inside and made the card look nasty compared to real life). I got it as part of a complete set back in 1996 or so.

P.S. Do you Bench guys have a lunch table at the National like those Ryan fellas?

    oh man, those ryan guys.

someone told me they all go to bathroom at the same time, even if all of them don`t have to go !!

    truthfully, i`m a huge fan.

if it were not for johnny, i`d probably be one of them.

I would have to agree with Bob about folding the stamps repeatedly and then tearing them apart. I sent in a Stargell last year and PSA didn't grade it (I can't remember why). Here is my '83 stamp that was also removed from the panel using this method:

Oh, while we're showing off the Kahn's, here's a few of mine:

    JEB,
Gorgeous cards! Kahn's have always been a favorite of mine (especially 66 thru 69). Nice clean design, clearest blue skies on any cards ever. I've often thought that PSA should have kept quiet on the '67 about Willie's name being Wilver and not WM. WM is a much better name.

    Bob,

Yeah, not sure why PSA did that. I have to assume that they get most of their info from the SCD Standard Catalog which also lists the card in this manner.
