CONFIRMED FAKE E-BAY ERROR PAGE!!!

My e-bay account was compromised today. This is what happened. While in My e-Bay, I clicked on Pay Now. I went to a page that had this on it:

REVIEW YOUR PURCHASE-SYSTEM ERROR Under that was

You are not signed "is" as the buyer of these items. Please logout and try again. Notice the word "in" was spelled "is". I signed out and in twice to pay for items until I saw the miss spelled "in". E-bay informed and I changed my password. Before that my computer was bogging down while in e-Bay, and after changing my password it's zip zip.

I tried to put the link up over in test forums with no luck. If you look over there msg title ...for fake error pg, you will see in my second attempt, after PN, a smiley face and some symbols and the word FAKE popped up in the text. Anybody tell me why that's happened? Here's the address to the link I kept going to with the error pg. If someone can help great. READ WARNING AT END OF THIS MSG. Instead of http:// it was https://payments.ebay.com/ws1/eBaylSAPl.dll?UnifiedCheckOutShippingDispatcher&item=3918581539
&transactionid=0&quanity=1&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNimageN

This I just tried over at test forums. After MEWN is the sysmbol : followed P and then N
If you type the symbol : followed by the capital P you will get image

WARNING: I tried twice in the test forum. The third time I went to edit it I went to a forum error page and have contacted the webmaster as suggested on the pg. I can no longer edit my post there. Also, put something up on the open forum. Don't know if it's related. This may be worth linking to across the street but don't know how. I hope this is all for nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Jerry

ADDED: Appears now to be a e-bay problem.

Thanks for the warning...sorry to hear about your imageexperience with it.

I get at least one or two fake eBay emails a week trying to get me to "resubmit" my account info. All of them include mispelled words...some worse than others.
  • I get the fake e-bay, paypal, cc, e-mails also. I even get fake e-bay e-mails that get quaranteend with viruses. But, this is the first time I ever clicked on pay now and went to a fake site. And I have all my firewall and antivirus stuff up to date. Jerry

They've tried every trick in the book on me and it's like this...I"M NOT BUYING IT! Everything goes to spoof@ebay, spoof@paypal etc, etc. There is no reason to have to update your personal account info. HOGWASH!!- EVER...what- did something change? If not-don't even sweat it!

I had a little adventure this week. There was a seller that had been registered but one week earlier. I always ask questions and so I did of him. "Been on eBay a week, huh and Zero feedback. You "look" legit but excuse me if I say, you don't feel right."

He went on to reassure me that indeed he was legit and so I bid and won. I went to pay with my pay pal acct and time after time paypal itself would cancel the transaction saying, "Seller not set up to receive payment!??" Now hold on just a minute...I thought pay pal account owner could send money to anyone with an email address. So, just what was this paypal was trying to tell me? I turned all of it over to Safe Harbor's Security team and eBay customer support, meanwhile I was trying to be helpful to the seller thinking he might just be experiencing start up problems.

Well Paypal and eBay both told me not to complete the transaction for security reasons. Hmmmm! One day he sent me to this place called MyCheckFree. Hey man, I'm sure! I wasn't going for it legit or fake. I was not about to give people I never heard of my personal checking account info! I'm sure. Long story short, that link you posted sure looks familiar. Ebay and Safe Harbor even went so far as to tell me I did not have to complete the transaction and they helped matters by NARUing the guy. Let me tell ya...you had better pay attention man. There are some slick asses out there. There is even this latest worm that when you delete email, they infect you- now that's scary! I have so many firewalls and safety gadgets on here it ain't even funny. You could be sending me legitimate email and if it even "looks" suspicious it gets destroyed! Spyhunter is good-check it out. Every night I remove at least a dozen parasite. When I was first introduced to it and saw all the parasites in my system, I sit. Enigma is good for pop ups and Norton is an animal. I set it on Auto Protect and it along with spyhunter and Enigma run all the time.

No, there is never any reason for any of us to update personal information. Think about it! What could possibly have changed to warant updating personal info that is on file? Neither Paypal nor ebay will addrees you in any other fashion than by your Name-not your email address amd cetainly not "Dear valued customer!" Besides that- misspelled words are a dead give away! Don't even open the email if you do not recognize it....ahhh but there are some pretty convincing headers and copied logoes. The geniuses are so frickin smart they fail to realize that every computer has a signature and they can track you down in a heartbeat...that is unless, let's say a teen is using a public terminal such as the library! We live in some serious times here boys and the crooks will want to get into our accounts and have a jolly good time with our money, thinking they can't get caught. Only problem is...this isn't a game! I know a few people that have been ruined financially because of this little box we put so much faith in!

To require this level of protection, how many pornographic websites does one need to visit per evening?

I had the same thing happen to me when trying to pay for an item, so I did log out and log back in. And now that you mentioned it...EBAY was slow for me over the weekend.

I've chanced passwords @ EBAY & Paypal this morning and I appreciate the 'heads up'.

After changing passwords this morning, EBAY was much faster for me. Guess I'm not diligent enough about periodically changing passwords as a normal business habit. Have to work on that.

  • That's what happened to me too. But it was happening for ALL the items I won, not just one.

The same thing has happened to us this morning. We have a few questions, can you please lets us know the following:

    1. How do we change our password for eBay? Do we log off eBay then re-log on to change it? Or do we need to call someone to do this? How safe is it since we have gotten this message?

    2. Is it necessary to change our PayPal password too?

Thanks for any helpful advice you can give us.

You change your ebay password by going into "My Ebay" and then on the left side panel select "Personal Information" under account. Then it will display your info. To the right of your password line is a link to change the password. You do not need to log off and back on to change your password.

I would recommend changing paypal's password anyway.
  • I wish I didn't feel this way, But, thank God I'm not the only one. I received a e-mail from e-Bay and they are aware of the problem and working to fix it. So, I guess we'll find out that it's fixed when it stops happening. It has happened to me this morning AFTER I changed my password. So, I removed any links I had for going to my e-bay. i.e. favorites etc. and started from scratch. So far so good. If I know something, I'll put it up.

So it's an eBay problem, and not some kind of malicious thing...is that what eBay said?

  • << <i>So it's an eBay problem, and not some kind of malicious thing...is that what eBay said? >>

That's what I got from the e-mail I received from them. But still could be malicious. I couldn't get out of them if the pg was theirs' or not. With the word "in" spelled "is" and the image thing makes me believe they were the one's compromised. I just paid for an item a few hours ago and had no problems.

never use an email from ebay and click paynow...go dirrectly to ebays site to see if won..I can easily watch to see if you won something and send a fake email and then direct you to where i want ya..

craftly clowns these guys are...its why internet scams are pulling in billions now...why work when people ignore common sense? Thats what these guys are saying when they get busted (few do) I saw alot of horror storys working for trans union IT dept...ones that would make your skin crawl

I think i will steer away from server management and go into security...image

I agree with Bill here. Those are very helpful tips. Another is to not use simple passwords. Use a good mix of letters/numbers. Like 8uhb2w0x or something that's very difficult to brute force guess before your account gets locked out to protect it. If you use your birthday, SSN, wife's name, etc. as a password, it makes your accounts more vulnerable. Also, the longer the password (in general) the more secure it is. So a 15 char password is more secure than a 6 char long one.

Yes, it's a site glitch - NOT a fake eBay error page or scam attempt.

From the 2 e-mails I've received from e-bay (not computer generated) the problem appears to be within their system.

    I use the EBay Toolbar...
I have used it for quite some time now with no ill affects.
It has a feature called Account Guard which turns Green if you are on a bonifide EBay or PayPal page.
It also alerts you when an auction is getting close, and lots of other great features image
  • I got a spoof Citibank email today...Duh. If they dont already know my account number, does that mean I dont have to payimage

    Cockney,

I get those all the time - and I don't even have any accounts with Citibank. The scammers don't screen very well.
