Is it any wonder I usually avoid Canadian sellers?

Power Seller with 16,000+ feedback rating of 99.6 offers a "Type III" 1877 5 sen.

I ask:
"What is the distinguishing characteristic for a Type III?
"For Y#22 Krause lists only Type I (unconnected characters in 1st element of "Meiji") and Type II (connected characters).
"For the same coin (No. 01-35 in its system) the Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association's 2004 catalog only lists the same two varieties.
"Also for the same coin in Japanese Coinage 2d Ed. (#V8) and Modern Japanese Coinage 2d Ed. (#14) neither Jacobs & Vermeule nor Cummings make mention of any varieties."

Seller responds:
"Unfortunately your question might be better answered by someone who deals more in Japanese coins... we are a Canadian seller who came across this item."

This encourages me about the professionalism of Canadian dealers how?

  • If that's not his specialty, he is obviously not going to know.

He said he doesn't know. You rather have him lie to look professional, like an American?
I collect Canadian coins! Almost done completing me 1900-2000 Set of Cents! What shall I do next?

    Such broad generalizations help nothing!

And to go along with this complaint is the one about US dealers who refuse to ship internationally. They base this on the 'horror stories' given by a few others of their one bad experience. Most of the time shipping internationally is painless. Have pity on collectors in other countries that are willing to send their money to you first (in another country) and trust you to send them something that is impossible to obtain where they live.

No, I'd rather have him not make an unsubstantiated claim that his coin is a non-existent "type". Obviously no one with knowledge in the field will bid on his coin, so he is marketing strictly to people who will assume that as a dealer he "knows" what he is selling. I certainly gave him enough information upon which to base his own research, if he wants to tout the coin as a particular type. Alternatively since there are two known types for the coin in question, he could delete the phony attribution and sell it for what it is to him - an unspecified type.

I might mention that I can't attribute the coin from the fuzzy, low resolution photos he posted.

There are good and bad sellers in every country. I've had a lot of good transactions from sellers north of the border.

Obviously you have an issue with the seller, who does not appear to be very professional. Yet that has nothing to do with where he resides. Sorry, your argument is flawed.

You can read more about that here. Maybe we could all be considerate of others when making statements... and I'll include myself in that as well.

    Cheers

Having a bad day Roy? image The thing is that you know more than any occasional ebay seller of Japanese coins, and some of them get intimidated by your emails. Still a good sport this Canadian and you managed to teach him the two types of the 1877 5 sen, so everybody's happy. image

Frankly, I've had a lower percentage of negative results with Canadian dealers and sellers than I have with American ones.

I've had the same experience as you, Askari.

  • There are good and bad sellers anywhere. Personally I credit the dealer for being honest with you rather than selling you something on a false premise and you being unhappy.
