1952 Bowman Yogi Berra PSA 8 ?? UHHHH

I'm sorry I will be the first to say that I am not an expert when it comes to 1952 Bowman BB although I have quite a few but in my mind there is no way in hell that this card should be graded an 8! By far the worst looking card of anykind I have seen in an 8 holder. Could this be preferential grading or just older standards since I noticed the flip was printed in the older font. link

  • The card looks fine. If you consigned this to them and want us to bid, just say so.

Yeah the way to pimp your items is to call their quality in to question got ya image

And the card is far from fine, discolored, bottom left corner looks horrible, centering , need i go on?

The card is borderline 7 or 8....but to say the card is the worst looking 8, that's stretching it a bit too far.

  • Not to mention cards always look worse when they are blown up bigger than actual size.
  • Might possibly be stretching it i got excited seeing what an 8 Berra card would look like clicked on the auction and was sorely disappointed to say the least.

    compare to this 8

    or this

    and this

All of these look like eights i'm sad to say the berra looks like a 6 or a 7 to me. JMO
  • all of the eights of 52 bowman on ebay look much better than that one and if you guys can't see that i'm not sure what the problem is, im really not trying to start a problem or anything I just don't think that card belongs in an 8 holder.
  • The card isn't discolored. Do you know what a low number card from that set normally looks like? The card stock and picture quality is very clean for a low number. You can't compare it to higher numbers. Scanning picks up small differences in colors and shades and contrast which can make corners appear different in a scan than they look in person. The corers don't look bad. If you own an 8 and a scanner then scan it and look at it. Are you for real complaining about the centering? What are you looking for? 50-50? It's an 8 not a 10.

I am collecting the set (in PSA 5 and 6) and the low #'s I have, including the Berra, have unbelievable focus and color. I am not aware of and have not heard about low number quality until now.

A PSA 8 should at least look like a PSA 7 in a scan. My PSA 5 looks better than that card.

  • Thanks Lothar and 1420 at least you guys have eyes I guess we found the other big dealers around here judging by their responses.
  • I'm not a dealer but don't you guys look at your own cards the same way you do others. Please post a scan of your 5 Berra that looks better. I don't understand what you don't like about the Berra card. Is it the seller?

I do not have a problem with the seller. The Berra card is definitely not a strong 8
  • Actually I don't even know the seller never dealt with him, but I must admit I have heard some great things about him. The thing I don't like about the Berra card is the fact that it looks nothing like an 8 should in fact nothing like a 7 should. I have alot of PSA 8's from various sets and none look half as bad as this card does.

if you don't like the card , DON'T buy it. if you search ebay on any given day you will find high and low end cards . that's the nature of the hobby, at least they are all unaltered. if you don't like it, move on to the next. it kind of gets old hearing every complaint of a card that doesn't live up to individual standards
  • My point is packcollector, that the standards no longer mean anything when a card like this is in a PSA 8 holder. When a card like this has the same grade as the other 1952 Bowman cards I pointed out and hell for the same as some of my 1976 Topps FB cards for that matter it just isn't right. IMO we have either massive evidence of early psa dealer bias or older grading standards.

7 million cards graded , not everyone is going to agree with every card. I have newer grades that are bad and older grades that are bad. I have them on both the positive and the negative but the fact is for the most part, 95% of my cards are acurately graded in the right holders which makes me feel pretty good.

I think that I have mentioned this before here - BBCX does itself a disservice by not taking the time to scan the card correctly. This is a white bordered card scanned against a white background. This always makes the card look horrible. You would think that with a higher dollar card, they would take the time to produce a nice crisp scan that truly represents the way the card actually looks.

I won't disagree about the centering - this is definitely a low end PSA 8, but, I bet you would be surprised if you saw this card in person.

I'll post an example of one of my cards shortly so you can see what I'm talking about.

JEB has a point, I have seen scans make a card look worse then it is, as well as scans that make a card appear to be nicer...jay
  • Well if it is truly the scan he is definitely doing himself a disservice but im not convinced it is all the scan.

I have noticed a 2 point increase in Berra card grades that somehow appear automatically; this, since the inception of the Berra/AFLAC commercials. Therefore, before the commercials, this card was graded a 6.

I'm looking for an AFLAC Berra psa 11 (a 9 before the commercials).

For what it's worth, I believe this Musial to be an accurately graded 1952 Bowman PSA 8. I agree, scanning Yogi against a white background may make the toning appear worse than it is. Also the white background makes it more difficult to judge the corners. Still, a bidder has to go by what he sees, not what he imagines it might look like under better conditions. A good example of "buy the card, not the grade."
