some of us spend three bucks, some spend 20K some spend way more! (not me)
Welcome and most importantly have fun.
Welcome to the boards. Tell us a little more about your goals for collecting or investing. You will get lots of advice and opinions here!
P.S. Go into your profile and turn on your PM function too!
There is very little competition for circ Morgans so prices tend to be very low for
most dates. These can be found in beautiful XF and AU for much less.
I'd start with the easy dates first, then, as you gain experience, move on to the tougher ones. I have a complete set, and, after putting it together, IMO, here are the really easy ones I'd start with:
1879-S
1880-S
1881-S
1882-S
1883-O
1884-O
1885
1885-O
1886
1887
1888
1888-O
1889
1896
1897
1898
1899-O
1900-O
1921
1921-D
1921-S
Another way to do this is to go to the registry section, and list those with a weighting of 1 and 2 (lower numbers are easier).

Check out a Vanguard Roth IRA.
The list from dollardude is a good list.
Since you are just starting, decide if you want certified coins or not. Also decide which company you want to use and stick with it.
PCGS is the certification company of choice for the majority on this board, with NGC a close second place. ANACS is definitely in third, but they will slab every Morgan you send to them (unlike PCGS and NGC which will body bag (i.e., not grade but return in a flip) a Morgan if it is damaged or cleaned, etc.).
I prefer PCGS, but that is just me. I have purchased PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, SEGS, NTC, and PCI. There is a difference between them. Do not overpay (i.e., pay the price for the grade on the slab) for ICG, SEGS, NTC and PCI or you will regret it.
Check out my web page for a lot more information.
Good Luck.
Devin..newbie..
i think i would start with the more common dates in NGC slabs @ say MS63,but buy them sight seen ?
at some point he is gonna run in to an oncoming train, would not we all ?
1895 proof and 1893S in that grade would be a new house for alot of us.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I suggest that you start by looking at the easiest Morgan date to get in premium condition -- the 1881-S in PCGS MS-64 or MS-64 PL.
You can pick up the MS-64 for ~$60 and the MS-64 PL for ~$80. It's a great starter coin. The look for the 1879-S, 1880-S & 1882-S.
Once you get the feel for grading the easy early S-Mint coins, then move up to either the "O" or "P" mint coins to become familiar with the differences in striking characteristics.
Have fun!
