Welcome aboard! Make sure you have your flak vest on haha. Give us more info....what do you want to collect (what coin series)? How do you want to collect it(date set, concurrant set, varieties, raw/slabbed)? What kind of budget zone do you have(how much $ are you willin' to dump)? Why are you collecting (investment vs. personal interest)?

If you really are starting from scratch, try the first five years of Morgans from the San Francisco mint. Absolutely beautiful well-struck Morgan Silver dollars. All five in MS-63 should total around $210.

    Good Luck
  • Try 1881S Morgans. As someone already mentioned they are well struck. The 81S is relatively cheap and available even into the MS67 non PL and even MS68s ranges. Of course, I'm talking about NGC or PCGS slabbed. Welcome, and have fun. There's a whole range of experience and fields here and members are willing to help.

Depends on what you'd call reasonably priced. How much per coin do you feel like spending?

some of us spend three bucks, some spend 20K some spend way more! (not me)

Buy the best coin you can afford. Quality over quantity is my approach. Better to have a few nice coins than a bunch of lousy ones.

Welcome and most importantly have fun.

What range of grade are you seeking? By the way, I know a fellow that sells A+ Morgans at reasonable rates...PM me if you want his eBay or email handle. He has a Morgan dollar website.image

    Welcome aboard.

There is very little competition for circ Morgans so prices tend to be very low for
most dates. These can be found in beautiful XF and AU for much less.

image I don't know a lot about Morgans, but I have a few you might be interested in. As someone's already suggested, turn your PM on. It should say something like "Enable Private Messages" in your profile. Check there.

I'd start with the easy dates first, then, as you gain experience, move on to the tougher ones. I have a complete set, and, after putting it together, IMO, here are the really easy ones I'd start with:

    1879-S
    1880-S
    1881-S
    1882-S
    1883-O
    1884-O
    1885
    1885-O
    1886
    1887
    1888
    1888-O
    1889
    1896
    1897
    1898
    1899-O
    1900-O
    1921
    1921-D
    1921-S

Another way to do this is to go to the registry section, and list those with a weighting of 1 and 2 (lower numbers are easier).

  • Don't get suckered into spending too much for a 1921 Morgan (from any mint). There are a lot of them out there.

The list from dollardude is a good list.

Since you are just starting, decide if you want certified coins or not. Also decide which company you want to use and stick with it.

PCGS is the certification company of choice for the majority on this board, with NGC a close second place. ANACS is definitely in third, but they will slab every Morgan you send to them (unlike PCGS and NGC which will body bag (i.e., not grade but return in a flip) a Morgan if it is damaged or cleaned, etc.).

I prefer PCGS, but that is just me. I have purchased PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, SEGS, NTC, and PCI. There is a difference between them. Do not overpay (i.e., pay the price for the grade on the slab) for ICG, SEGS, NTC and PCI or you will regret it.

Check out my web page for a lot more information.

    Good Luck.
  • Thanks for the welcome guys!! I've collected only 2 morgans so far. One was given to me 6-8 years ago...1884 CC(in a plastic gsa case?)..but from the looks of those prices..I don't think I'll be collecting those anytime soon image I'd like to spend around $40-$75 dollars for graded coins in plastic cases. Preferably all graded by the same company. I'd like them to be in good condition almost uncirculated if I can, to kind of get a set going? My price range may be a unrealistic. As far as for the purpose, collecting and investing. Morgans are an absolutely beautiful coins, but on the other hand..when it comes time to move on to another hobby I'd like to know they have some real market value..not just intrinisic value to myself. S series? I have some parents from New Orleans so I have a personal interest in the O series. How hard are these to come by in uncirculated condition graded?

  • what do you guys think ?
i think i would start with the more common dates in NGC slabs @ say MS63,but buy them sight seen ?
at some point he is gonna run in to an oncoming train, would not we all ?
1895 proof and 1893S in that grade would be a new house for alot of us.

Unc "O" mint morgans are a bit more expensive as the New Orleans mint did'nt have the quality of the SanFrancisco or CarsonCity mints. Welcome image

I suggest that you start by looking at the easiest Morgan date to get in premium condition -- the 1881-S in PCGS MS-64 or MS-64 PL.

You can pick up the MS-64 for ~$60 and the MS-64 PL for ~$80. It's a great starter coin. The look for the 1879-S, 1880-S & 1882-S.

Once you get the feel for grading the easy early S-Mint coins, then move up to either the "O" or "P" mint coins to become familiar with the differences in striking characteristics.

    Have fun!
