Canadian Token Grading Quiz

bosoxbosox Posts: 1,562 ✭✭✭✭✭
Now that I have unboxed my collection from years ago and fully have the bug again, I wonder if anybody can give me hand with token grading. Canadian tokens are really neat, but I have always had a hard time grading them. The following five pics represent some fairly common tokens I have. They are representative of my others, so all opinions on grade are welcome.

  • At a glance, they seem to get better as you scroll down. Something like VG, F, VF, XF, XF, maybe?

    #1 - VG
    #2 - gF
    #3 - VF
    #4 - EF
#5 - UNC? I can't see any wear in the areas I would expect it to show, but hard to tell from the image.

Thanks for the responses so far. These things are tough to grade. I'll let this run for a day or so and then I'll post the consensus grades I got on the Canadian site.

Thanks to all that responded. I posted the same pics on a Canadian coin site. Just to show the disparity of opinion on grading Canadian tokens, here are the grading ranges of both sites combined. No wonder grading these things is so difficult.

    1. VG to VF. This is a rarer token not usually found in very good shape, so I think that weighed into the decision of those who said VF.

    2. F to EF. Those who graded this higher noted that the Nova Scotia tokens usually exhibit weak strikes.

    3. F to AU. The dark brown actually hides the fact that this coin doesn't have much wear. You have to look closely at the picture to see that. It probably really is EF or so.

    4. VF to EF. Pretty close I think.

    5. EF to UNC. My guess is AU.

    Again, thanks to all.

Just for the fun of it, here are the grades I assigned as I was scrolling through the pics before I read anyone else's:

    1) VG
    2) F (there is wear, it's not just a soft strike)
    3) VF+/XF (hard to tell since the pic is so dark)
    4) XF
    5) at least XF+, maybe AU (but again hard to tell from the pic)
