PCGS vs ANACS

After all these years I sent 5 morgans in for gradding.1881cc and 1893s to pcgs 1894 1895s 1889cc to anacs. My question is? How does anacs rate compared to pcgs being #1

  • Im thinking its all opinion, alot of people will tell you that PCGS is the best, because of popularity. I think there great, but for the money I also think that Anacs is great. I tend to think Anacs is better with Morgans, but again just my opinion. Please don't flame me.image

PCGS is better in every regard when it comes to Mint State coins...in my humble opinion.

It was my intension to send them all to pcgs, but the owner at the coin shop said that if they were his he would send the 2 to pcgs and the other 3 to anacs . I took his advise. He said that the 3 looked like they were cleaned a long time ago.I know not in the last 40 years.

Every dime I crossed from ANACS to PCGS went the same grade or higher. I think ANACS gets a bad rap for some reason. Oh, never mind, don't buy any dimes in ANACS holders, save them for me!

ANACS is definately a strong #3. They aren't too bad, in fact, they are better in some series, and ANACS Ultra-DMPL Morgans are worth good money, and usually will bring more than PCGS DMPLs because for ANACS, the UDMPL requirement is 12" and PCGS DMPL is 8"

But, ANACS is a very good service for problem coins and also if you just need authentication of a coin.

In my 10 years of Morgan collecting I have developed the following opinions about ANACS:

They do an outstanding job with Morgans on variety identification.
If you want a coin in a holder, no matter what the problem, go to ANACS.
They tend to overgrade Mint State Morgans by one grade.
They tend to overgrade circulated Morgans by at least one grade.
They tend to overgrade key date VAMs, period.
They will often give the DMPL and PL designation to coins that have a lot of die polishing lines and frost in the fields.
My crossover success rate with ANACS coins to PCGS has been about 33%.
    When in doubt, don't.

I think ANACS does a decent job, but they tend to send too many coins back as cleaned. My local dealer showed me two 1932-S quarters he had just gotten back from ANACS. Both were graded AU Details net EF40 cleaned. No way were either cleaned. Both had come out of albums belonging to an old collector.

It is best to be most concerned about the coin in the plastic instead of the plastic itself. PCGS and ANACS both have something positive to offer. I have coins graded by both companies. In part, it depends what your collecting objectives are.

I will agree with Dennis, however ANACS has tightened like a guy with a mouthful of sours. I'm convinced they are now equal if not better. The graders at ANACS have been there forever, so they have an experience edge too. With PCGS, these guys leave every couple of years to become dealers, etc.

send your circ morgans to pcgs. if they come back bagged, then send to anacs.

compare auction prices on circ morgans (especially your key dates) graded by both pcgs & anacs, you'll readily notice where public perception rests.
  • My personal opinions is: Both are very good at evaluating your coins. I have
PCGS, ANACS & NGC. ALL my Morgans are graded by ANACS - No exceptions.
I have NEVER been disappointed. Hope this helps.

Most of my morgans are anacs..or anacs crossovers to pcgs. I have never been dissapointed in an anacs morgan...other series..they might need a little help!~
  • I just purchased a Buffalo nickel in an anacs ms65 holder. The coin is a very solid 65 and I feel very confident that it would cross to PCGS. The dealer said the coin was just graded recently. I feel that anacs is grading quite conservatively lately. Still, I will always look at a coin carefully to see if my grade matches the one on the holder.
