Idea on pricing and grade of 1903-O Morgan

GooberGoober Posts: 980 ✭✭✭
Thought I'd gather some opinions on this Morgan. The coin is actually shinier than the camera shows. The darker area on the cheek and in the middle of the reverse is actually the camera reflection. I know the coin has been dipped. You can see the spotting on the reverse. The strike seems strong except on the reverse where the feathers on the breast seem weak, almost rubbed (possibly polished?). Wanting to sell this coin but I don't want to misrepresent it in any way. Also I don't have a clue as to pricing, especially since it looks like a bad dip job. Any ideas?

Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

I don't think that coin is AU, looks uncirculated to me. This coin has the C3 reverse, and there is rarely breast feather definition on coins struck with this reverse. As far as whether it has been cleaned or dipped, there is too much jpeg compression for me to tell for certain.

My gut reaction was AU55. This is one of those coins where accurate judging from a photo is impossible.
    When in doubt, don't.

It looks unc... perhaps a 61 or 62. From the photo, the coins looks as if it has been dipped and perhaps there is a slight PVC issue with the reverse. How has the coin been stored? Has it been in a flip for an extended period of time? As for the value, I imagine this should fetch $325-340 or so, but with this market, that may be off...

It was originally in a holder containing six Orleans coins, then put in a flip. The coin is bright, the pictures are pretty accurate except the picture is making it look more matte and not showing the gloss. To me it looks outstanding except for the reverse where the spotting is occurring and the light breast feathers. If not for the breast it would look 63 to me. The light breast feathers makes me go AU58. I only paid $27 for the coin.

  • Hi,

The photos are nice and big ... almost too big and too blury... a better photo would make it easier to grade. The coin looks beyond AU... it's hard to tell if the breast feathers are there, usually the "O" mints are soft but... again, the photo is too blury.

It looks higher than AU... somewhere in the Mint State but... toss up clearer photos.

For less than 30 bucks... you did fine.

  • Typical soft feathers for "O" mints, I would say its a MS62/63, but if its been dipped, it will probably net a AU55-58

K6AZ, I looked at your website concerning ACG. An ACG Morgan was the first encapsulated coin I bought. I broke it out within the first week but kept the insert. I'll have to send it in to see if it will cross.

Weak breast feathers are common for an O mint. I would be more concerned about the PVC...I stand by the 61 -62 grade, however, the PVC issue needs to be resolved.
