Anyone else putting together birth year sets? 100 Year sets?

I currently have the finest of my birth year 1968 registered and am putting together a birth year set for my daughter (2002). I am also putting together sets from 1868 and 1902. Is anyone else doing this?

Would be kinda fun to do sometime. I would do a hundred year one for 1867. Lots of interesting coins produced then.

Birth year sets for the entire family:
    2001
    1979
    1978
    1962
    1958

I've also started picking up a few pieces 100 years earlier than the coins in these sets but that is a work in progress and no where near as complete or as high quality pieces as the real birth years. But one can always hope! I like the birth year sets as they really bring the family in to the process and in a way, they are like a type set if you look at all the different coins across all years required.

I'm doing a 1969 slabbed birthyear proof set for myself. (Just picked up the JFK today) But I've completed mint sets for everyone in my family in an old Wayte Raymond Album

    1935, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1962, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1977, 1987, 1993.

And I'm doing a 1912 gold type set in honor of my maternal grandfather since he was the reason I ever started collecting!

  • I'm putting together a 1979 birth year set of proofs and uncirc but raw, not slabbed.

    Dave (dldallen),

You have my 1958 Lincoln! it was the finest coin from 100 original rolls, early die state witha tremendous glow. I made that coin and sold it to David Poole. You got it cheap as well, as I remember. I was going to buy it back but I forgot. Nice I am glad it has a good home. Let me know if you ever want to sell it.

I have put together 4 birth-year proof sets for my kids (all in matched PR69 grades). I am currently working on mint sets for the kids as well. The years - 1980, 1986, 1990 and 2002. I am 1 coin short on the 2002 set, and several coins short on the first three. After I complete these sets, I will put together sets for me and my wife - 1962 and 1964.

Wow, did I get inspired. Now, thanks to MadMarty, I have the Roosevelt and Jefferson for 1969 as well.

All three -- JFK, Roosie and Jefferson are all NGC PF69UCAMs.

Now I just need the Washington and Lincoln!!!

Is your Dad Bill Gates? Those early sets 1860 - 1916 are going to be very expensive. image

I once paid a grand for some rare Greek proof thing dated 1960 because that was my birth year and I figured I should have it. I came to my senses about thirty seconds later. Funny thing is, the Greek market got hot and I ended up doubling my money a couple years later. Go figure.

I just looked at the price of an 1854-O double eagle and decided not to attempt a 100 year set.

i'm doing birthyear sets of my family; a couple of great uncles, grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and my sister and i

    '02, '07, '09, '10, '11, '12, '36, '39, '40, '42, '43, '46, '62, '63, '66, '68, '69. '71, '72, '73, '76...i'm actively working on '02 through '43 (except '39 and '46) right now

i have to decide if i just go for mint or proof sets of '62 and later...they're reasonably priced and easy to get...

  • Yep! Working on a 1963 DCAM proof set for me, and 1996 and 2001 complete
sets (MS, Proof, Commems & American Eagles) for the kids.

  • I am doing a high grade proof set for me (1956). I also have a raw mint set from that year which is really neat.

  • Carl,

I guess that depends on how complete you want to be. I only have the Type 2 and am happy with that. The T2 is more affordable with the really deep cameo contrast that I favor. I have my set listed in the NGC Registry and they only had 1 slot for the half the last time I looked.
  • UMM,
1956 Frankie Type 1 PR67 or 68 UCAM or DCAM
population (i didnt look) is about oh ZERO !
is that a tough date ?

aem4162, don't bet on it...I have been working on a 1979 Mint set for quite a while now and I only have 6 out of 14 coins so far.
They are extreemly hard to find. image
