#1. Fewer nicks on the Indian's face and jawbone as well as the buffalo, and slightly better luster.

I'd say it's a toss-up, but I picked #1. The coins are very similar conditionwise.

    Mgoodm3, this is a no-brainer!

#1 looks better so it must be the MS65 example or you wouldn't have started the thread in the first place.image

Regardless of grade, No. 1 is the better coin, particularly in terms of hits...

no trickery involved. Have two 38D's one bought in a 65 slab, one got raw (billed as a 65) and put in to a 66 slab.

Look at the tail of #1, it is full the second one is flat.

The second one cannot be a MS-66. Of course there are other factors as well.

  • #1 looks nicer. It has a nice, frosty look (makes me want to eat a frosted doughnut). I voted that #1 was the 66.

  • #1 is a 66 way less hits in the face and on the buffalo

#2 (the bottom one) has better strike on the reverse and, to me, has less hits.
    #1 Obverse is nice however.

Of course, since you really can't judge the luster with a photo there really is no way to tell.

    #1 is MS66
    #2 is MS65
    When in doubt, don't.

#2 seems to be a stronger strike, thus the MS66 designation....Ken

  • I believe #2 is the 66 because of a sharper strike.

I went with #2, while #1 has less hits on the face, it looks like it has quite a few hits on the Buffalo...

Number one is the 66 because of the luster, thats what it is all about with the 38d, they all have nice strikes( I am going to act like I know
what I'm talking about since there is a fifty percent chance image)

edit to fix the spelling of fitty
  • NEITHER should be a 66 !!

IMHO, # 1 has too many hits on the buffalo, and a flat tail, s/b a 65.

    # 2 has small to med hits all over the indian and buffalos, and scuffs on indians cheekbone, s/b a 64.

    Gradeflation strikes again !!

Here's my take on this. The first one's in a 66 holder. The coin is very pretty with amazing luster and shine. The obv is very clean. The rev has more hits, but not in places you can see them well when not magnified 20 times. It's the one I will keep just for eye appeal, regardless of grade. but it's nice having the grade too. If they had bith been 65, I would have kept this one.

The second is in a 65 holder (rattler). It's cleaner on the rev and more marks on the obv than #1. A little better strike. luster is good but can't compare with #1.

You guys seemed to agree with PCGS at least on average. The differences are pretty subtle.

    mgoodm3,

That's a big hit across the Buffalo's beard on the first coin. I realize the image is enlarged, but I'm a bit surprised it graded MS66. The obverse, however, is very nice.

i voted 66, & think pcgs did an exemplary job of grading both coins. undoubtedly, 38-d is the primo type coin for buff's.
