Type 1/Type 2 US 1981 proof sets

Can anybody tell me how to identify my 1981 us proof set in reference to it's type. Should I look for some distinguishing identification on the coins to determine if it's a type 1 or type 2 proof set. Thanks

  • T-I and T-II refer to blob S and clear S.

Look for it on the SBA and cent.

    The type 2 looks shaved,or has a flat surface.The type 1 doesn't.

Type I on an 81-S looks like the type II on a 79-S.

Type II on the 81-S has to have clear proof surfaces inside both loops. The s also looks thinner.

Look at Dominus Deus pictures of the two types above. Descriptions can cause confusion. The type 2 is much more valuable. Steveimage

The top of the S is the easiest way to distinguish these. It is larger and more
open on the type 2. Some of the type 1's are very clear and you can get con-
fused if you just look for something else.

the bulbous top serif on the Type II is the best benchmark, as these can be confused.
