Do you offer high end coins made to Registry Set owners first ?

I have always been of the opinion that we should. It happened to me once.I am putting together a "Top Lincoln Proof Registry Set". A coin was made by a fellow board member. It was offered to me and I gladly said yes.I will be eternally grateful for that consideration. The coin remains a pop 1 with none higher. While I'm sure had he put the coin in a national auction or even Ebay,he might have gotten more than I paid for it.Your thoughts appreciated.

I have tried to sell second-tier spares to registry collectors on this forum. For the top pops, I usually want to trade with the collector for another top pop that he/she has spare. We spend so much time on this hobby that selling does not recover the effort. Trading at least involves exchange of time investment.

    Yep.....image

If IMO it is worthy Registry material and not just a number on a piece of plastic. Actually a few have been offered on the BST and no interest was shown so they went to Ebay and forumn members bought them there.

Guess I asked tooooo much for them on the BST forum.....image I guess it could also be bad timing money wise in some cases. Certainly I am not loaded to the gills with bucks and I suppose not all other collectors are either.

Coins have been offered to me and as you said it is always appreciated.

  • I've also had coins on the b/s/t or offered them to forum members that I knew would be interested. Some have bought when offered. Others had paid the same or more on e-bay. I'm not sure if they don't "know" me and want to keep the transaction more formal or they were looking to catch a bargain.

On the other side of the coin I had purchased a nice coin off a forum members website. When I received the coin I pm'ed them to say how nice it was and that I am looking forward to getting more coins offthem in the future. They said great. Two weeks later I pm'ed them for a price on a couple coins they had listed as POR. No responce, A week later I e=mailed them from the site which I had done previously still no responce. I guess they have people waiting in line to buy their pop top coins and do not have time or common courtesy to respond to me.

My only thought is I may have commited one of the seven mortal sins by not publicly blowing smoke up their azz and listing whare it came from in my registry set.

Can anyony guess who I am speaking of ?
  • I have currently received more Pop coins from forum members than I purchased from outside. I thank those that have given me the chance to obtain these coins for my sets.

Would you even bother to check to see who could use it ?

I always offer first.....but like manofcoins, BST posting usually doesn't amount to much but direct email offers seem towork best - to other collectors I've come to know -mostly thru the Registry.

I had a coin offered to me once from a guy that got my e-mail from the registry. I wish more would be offered to me.

I personally dont go searching for a buyer in the registry for my coins. I'm not sure how it would go over if I found someone who needed one that I had and I contacted them.

Here's my story and its quite simple,

I have never offered any coins for sale on this forum or any other forum.

I bought a few MS68FB dimes off of Wondercoin and was very thrilled! image Thankyou very much!

Then some time passed and I decided to buy from a very nice guy with whom I had sent a coin for free so as he may complete his set at 100%. Now mind you it was a lower grade (MS64) I believe, but none the less I asked for nothing in return except just to see a fellow collector reach the lofty goal of 100%.

Anyway...I sent a PM and asked whether he still had the coin and what was the S/H/I. I sent him a personal check and he stated that he would hold it for 10 days. 3 weeks passed and no coin, so I sent him an e-mail...no response, then a few days later, I sent another PM and he responded stating that he was out of the country on business and that he would send out my coin ASAP! I finally received my coin in alittle over a month.

Now, I don't know how many of you conduct business around here, but I was alittle uncomfortable with the fact that I had to wait for my coin, when all this person had to do was to send me an e-mail stating that he was leaving the states and he didn't have time to send out my coin. Plus being a board member, he should have trusted me enough to send my coin before he left, afterall my check # was over 2000. Its not like I bounce checks for a living.

I usually just forget stupid things like this, but it must have bothered me enough to share with all who will read this.

    Have a great 4th!!!!!

    Later, Paul.

I almost always offer high grade coins to registry set owners first. We tend to be the best customers and there is little reason with some coins to go to auction or a middleman since you pretty much know who the buyers will be anyway. Why not save the fees and both parties get a deal.

No, I haven't. But almost all my dupes are not top pops.

I am happy to say that a few members ask me if I would like a coin before putting up here or eBay.
If I have the funds I usually say yes. These may not be top pops either, but at this point they're still pricey.

I think & hope members here have another member or 2 that they like to deal with.

I have bought several coins from board members, and as yet had no problems. In fact, I have to say some of my best deals have come from these dealings. A special thanks to Rick who is now in first place in the clad Roosies. When I first started my set he sold me 12 MS66 coins, all of them weighted, for less than $100. Along with these coins came a lot of advice and wisdom that he has learned through the years. Where else can you get that kind of a deal, along with friendship, other than from a Roosie collector? A CLASS guy all the way. image

It's rare that I would have the opportunity to offer that quality coins to anyone, Just so happens that it occured when this thread came up. But when your collecting habits change sometimes things that are not considered for sale suddenly are saleable to get OTHER STUFF. And what better place than where specialists in a particular field can have first shot at it. Yes I offer, if I have it.

Quite a few Registry Set owners would like to have "other than high end" coins to help fill in the gaps. Sometimes these "other than high end" coins are very hard to find at any price.
