Ebay scam on NGC64 Hi Relief Saint???

roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,303 ✭✭✭✭✭
Check out auction 3919621522 for tduddles. This seller has 33 feedbacks (100% positive) but for all items in the $1-100, none of them coins. Now they offer an expensive Hi Relief NGC64 that has a professional catalogued photo on a PCGS 64 saint. The set up looks like what Goldberg's or Superior like to use.

I mailed the seller and asked for futher information, and in particular why the wrong photo was presented. It's not like we all have multiple Hi Reliefs in our collections, esp. when the seller never bought or sold a coin on ebay before.

The reply with grammar of a 9 year old:

___________________________________

"I'm so sorry, but i wrong the coin picture, so i have attached the actual coin picture in the email. This coin is from my grandfather, now him is death and i have a medical problem and i need the money, this is the reason why i selling now. This coin have a big sentimental value for me and I'm ready sorry coz i decided to sell it, but i really need the money.

P.S. You can see the reference number on the picture, just zoom in.

Kind regards

Sure enough, they sent me a photo of an NGC64 Saint with the same pro setup from the same catalog as the PCGS coin. I sent another email to the seller requesting more information. Boy this sure seems awful "ODD" on the surface.

Thanks for the link Russ. Hey, who says Modern guys can mix with Classic Collectors??image

I was trying to see if I could find the PCGS coin in a recent catalog but no luck. The cert # on the NGC coin they sent a separate photo to me of was # 1667710-002. Nice coin too. But I doubt they own it. Bidding is pretty lively on this one with over 35 bids. And no reserve either to protect this $20,000 coin...that is really odd! Doesn't that scream scam once again?!!

Wow. Sure looks like a scam.

    FYI

There will be two high reliefs in 64 in the ANR pre ANA sale. One in Proof and one in Mint State.

    Nice ones too.

Cert number in auction is for this coin:

I forgot to add that if you look closely at the slab in the auction, you can see it's photoshopped. The barcode extends down too far into the slab. He's pasted the picture of the NGC coin onto a PCGS slab.

Very good research, I'm impressed with you guys. Yowser! It's possible tduddles could have bought the saint and is now reselling it on ebay. If they paid the $17,500 from Stanford Coin and Bullion it's probably worth several thousand more now.

Yup, that's the same photo that tuddles sent me privately, the NGC64 photo from Stanford. I wonder why they just didn't post that one instead of posting a PCGS coin photo? Are they running so many scams they cannot keep track of them??

I had noticed that Ebay lsiting, too and have it on my watch list so that I can warn the "winning" bidder.

Sure does - and doesn't the slab say MS65?

Standford's material seems to be a popular target of this type of scammer; possibly because their offerings on the "go antiques" site are not as well known as those at other online venues. I've contacted them in the past regarding similar scams with high-grade seated material on eBay.

    Rella-
You're right! I remember talking about something similar a few months back. It was smart of him to have this auction end on a holiday weekend. Less chance of someone contacting the owner that way.

I'm glad you'll be contacting the high bidder. If only there were some way to get these thieves arrested. I wonder how many decent people have actually lost money this way. image

Nice catch on the PCGS 65. The coin being offered is an NGC64 and they have a picture of that if you request to see itimage

Not to diminish the sliminess of a scam such as this.... but I still don't understand the mentality of someone willing to bid multiple thousands of dollars on an ebay coin without knowing the seller, seeing the coin, or even having the proper picture on it..... freakin' weird.... image

They list the NGC number in the description. Perhaps they put the PCGS image in so it would not be discovered that it was a stolen image. 1 day listing so you cannot track down all the details (although you guys were quick on this one)

    The high bidder just retracted.image

Why should anyone be afraid to bid with this seller...they have 100% feedback buying trinkets, toys, and glassware on ebay.
Hey, I'd trust them watching my briefcase of coins at a show!

    It's gone from ebay.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I requested to Mr. Tuddles to retract the auction or I was going to forward the information to ebay concerning their tactics. Guess they decided to bail on this one. I saved myself a neg too.image

Only eBay can remove the item from the database. All the seller can do is cancel, but the listing would still be there.

    You vry funy person. image

Ebay sent me a notice that duddles account was hijacked and it is now frozen while ebay investigates. that would seem to make sense why the mom and pop shop account that was selling and buying inexpensive items moved into the big time with a $20,000 hi relief saint. Me wanna buy one two coz I luv dem.

  • Musta been one of Yodas auctions.

    You from me by coin,yes?
  • You guys are good. Has anybody ever counted the number of miss represented coins that are caught per day, week, by members of PCGS forums? Thers's money in what some of you are doing you know!!
If I saw an icon in the description to click on that would send the item nr to some of you and get a critique back, even if I already bid, I'd pay a $5 fee for it if it drew any suspicion.. Just a $ thought.

  • Ditto to all the kudos to you guys for figuring this thing out. UncleWiggly made a good point. There ought to be some sort of protection mechanism. Maybe eBay already has a way of reporting suspect auctions, deleting listings, etc., but there ought to be some additional level of protection.

Maybe the more appropriate question is why are we all on here on a holiday weekend in the first place???

Anyway, I'm glad all of you caught this one. I don't buy much off of ebay, but look often. If I found a bargin, I might bite. Glad to see the forum members covering everyone's back.
