Actually, there was a modest economic recovery in the mid-30's. It was followed by another downturn later in the 30's.

This doesn't make sense. The number of Morgan dollars minted in 1921 and Peace dollars minted in 1922 and 23 at the Denver mint were a fraction of those minted in either Phily or San Fransisco.
Denver should have had the capacity to produce plenty of nickels. They simply were not needed.

In fact, I've read where many freshly minted coins from the early 20's sat in bank vaults until the after the economic recovery of the 30's.
