Question for collectors.

I mean this as a question for collectors, NOT pure investment.

Do you ever get the desire to sell all or most of your entire collection and put it in one AMAZING coin? A true rarity. Something that makes someone say "YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE!?!?!"

I do - it'll probably never happen, but sometimes i wanna trade it all in for an 1848 CAL quarter eagle.

No. I prefer to have a variety of low-mid price coins rather than one expensive coin.

Nah- it would drive me nuts just to have only one coin to look at- I need diversification, and I love the concept of developing a collection..... image

Never. I have had some of my coins since I was in Jr. High which was almost 50 years ago. I could not bear the thought of ever parting with any of them.

  • I'd also say no, as I've become attached to my mid-priced collection. I'd also prefer several mid-priced ones to a couple of high-priced rarities.

Nope I also like to have different kinds of coins. I just started a type set for just that reason.

  • I'd do it if it was one of my goal coins. But I know as soon as I could I'd start buying different coins again.

Not for one coin but over the last few years I have gotten rid of all my duplicates, mint stuff, and other accumulations. I probably got rid of 1000 peices(99%) raw, and bought maybe 10-15 certified coins of equal value.

Since I collect moderns, selling my collection to buy one coin wouldn't get me much. As we all know, moderns are worthless.

I had a dealer say he would trade a first year silver dollar for my registry proof collection. I don't remember the specifics of the coin but it did look nice. However, I would have a hard time making that kind of exchange. Not enough to look at and too expensive for me to carry anywhere.

I do agree with 09sVDB. I have been selling odds and sods to put the cash into a few slabbed coins.

I have collected all the SAE's except the 1995-W and all the Silever Proof Sets since 1999,and have thought of selling all those and buy more Lincolns.

Yes, and the longer I collect the stronger the urge becomes. I'm after a few coins I've always wanted.

Only as of late have I pondered selling some raw stuff to go for a high grade slab. I come from a long line of hoarders though and it's hard.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

I have pondered this very thought many times. I just can't come to the conclusion to sell off my sets. I think I realized that if I had one or two very nice coins what would I do with all of my free time, you can only look at the same coin so many times. I am trying to build a type set with the best coins I can afford, maybe one of each will do the trick.

I don't know about just one coin, but I'm in the process of getting rid of most of my moderns.
