I agree with Jay. The two high bidders are perhaps even more shocked. I just replied to a thread, "Don't ya hate it when you set your snipe @ 2.5x SMR ..." well this thread is "Don't ya hate it when you set your snipe @ 68.86x SMR ..." It really puts things in perspective. Good luck finding that card.
I think that is the point when I'd work on a few other sets and wait for the pop to jump up. What did Gibbon go for a few years ago? I just bought a '61 set with a slug of 8's for little more than double what Houk is going for. Sometimes it just gets a bit out of hand.

I just got a 1961 Houk in 8 last week from a submission. 50-50 centered. I'm going to list it on Ebay this week. If anyone wants to make an offer before I do email me at rjc012661@aol.com
These prices just never cease to amaze me, I remember thinking people were idiots for paying these prices but now that I understand "the deal" I think I am going to go after more commons that I come across for my set and wait on the HOF's, it seems they are more easier to locate than a lot of commons are.
<< <i>I renewed my membership to PSA and sent in my 10 free grades. They were posted Thursday. Check it out!! Inv # 4156777 zip 85331
My Houk will make it number 14 I think.
I also got the World Series Virdon card in an 8.....pretty happy about it. >>
That is a great pull, MAriner. I am afraid that PSA may be opening the gates on grading. The second Houk on Ebay looked pretty weak, and it is very hard to believe the number of PSA 9's all of a sudden showing up.
The 306 WS card will do extremely well, and the Billy Martin PSA 8 may get close to $100.
I agree that the second Houk on ebay looked like a very questionable 8. It looks like a case of the buyer buying the grade and holder, not the card. My Houk is well centered and a beaut....it definitely deserved the 8 grade. When I receive the cards, I will put a scan of it and the WS Virdon card on my set in the registry.

This is an example of why I've turned back the clock on my collection. I realize the purpose of this particular forum and I applaud the energy and affection its members show for their favorite sets. Mine happens to be 1961, far and away, and I have a couple thousand cards from this beautiful baby. Still, tell me I can have this Houk for $1500 or anywhere from 1-3 HOFers pre-1920 IN THE SAME PSA 8 GRADE (depending on the set) and I think its a no-brainer. The love of the chase and the set builder's satisfaction of completion do not escape me (although the competition to be #1 does), and I understand that everything's relative in terms of how much money each of us has to sepnd, but still, come 'on, would you take this Houk or any TWO of the following in PSA 8: e90-1 Addie Joss, T207 Chief Bender, Fan Craze Nap Lajoie and m101-4 Connie Mack.
This is why, while I read this forum nearly daily, I've decided to put my 1961 set on the shelf for about 3 more years, when I hope and believe I can get high grade examples at a fair price. Maybe stupid, but I guess we'll see.
I'm happy to say that the 1961 Houk PSA 8, was purchased though Buy it Now for what I thought to be a fair price. Its my opinion that the tough ones will always command an increasing price over the years as long as there is still an influx of collectors. Look at the tough 1951 Bowman's in 8, they bring thousands.

I had thought that Primeeagle already had this one. Guess I was wrong on that one.
Good luck with the auction, Gaspipe. I would have thought that the price would be coming down, but it hasn't happened.

Agree Rob....I was more interested in the first Houk...the second has lots of "snow".
