OT - suggestions for using a pop-up blocker

The advertising thread has reminded me about getting a pop-up blocker installed. What do you use and why?

Thanks!

I use AnalogX POW,,,, you can get it free at cnet.com ,,, works very well, just double click ad title in the window and it is blocked from that point onimage

If you want a very good Anti-virus program,,, use AVG 7.0 also free at cnet.com
  • SpySweeper works well for me. It lists all the cookies on your machine with the option to remove or block any as well as the popup ads.

I use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall. I can block both banner ads and pop-up ads.

I don't object to having a banner ad at the top of the page - it's the movement that I find very annoying.

I don't believe you can set POW to delete the Advertising on ONE page,, it is for those annoying pop up that are all buy themselves,, I am unaware of any pop up blocker except what is mentioned above that is free and will just remove the banner on the top of the page,,, it is NOT technically a POP-UP,, it is just an advertisment that PCGS has subjected us to. • PopUp blockers are all a scam too, except they blackmail you or get you to buy them.
What they do is block all popups that don't pay them to not block their popups.
You need to use a Adaware or other program to remove the offending stealth popup programs off your PC, otherwise the popups just get worse and worse.

I find Spybot and Adaware work very well as a combo.

  • Ad Aware works well to remove annoying pop-up software that may have installed itself onto your computer without your knowledge. Google has a Free Toolbar that blocks most pop-ups.

<< <i>It lists all the cookies on your machine with the option to remove or block any >>

How do you tell which ones are evil, and which ones are good, like the one that let's you sign on to your stock broker's site?

  • wrt to cookies, hopefully you can recognize the good cookies by their url.....some are a complete mystery though. It was worth re-establishing my bank account cookies, ebay & yahoo, to get rid of the 95% of the crap I was getting. I never thought that I would consider porn was a really big problem, until it started full page pop-ups on my machine. It can lead to misunderstandings.

I use Mozilla Firefox as well. Before I made the switch to Firefox, I used the google toolbar.

  • I also use the Google toolbar. It is free, and really is great at blocking popups and makes searches much easier.
