Unopened 1975's

Just wanted to see what you all thought about ripping 1970's unopen for your sets. I am looking for 1975 Topps Football unopened and was trying to figure out if I should go cello, rack, wax, or vending. Also wanted to get some suggestion on some good dealers that might have this stuff and you all trust. Thanks for any input but I thought I would check here before I throw some cash away on some packs that want have any PSA 9 in them.

it's always a gamble and the chances of not taking a beating (in a financial sense) are against you....but it sure is fun ripping that old wax!

edited to say: bbcexchange and bbckid are the only dealers i would consider for ungraded unopened material

I agree! I've had some pretty good luck with Dave & Adams Cardworld as well.

  • Reds Man,

Somehow the reply did not come through. Did you try by email or PM?

Anyways, thumbed through the set last night just for kicks. Almost all have sharp corners. There are several 9's and some 10's to be had. It seems that centering is a hurdle with that set. I'm not a dealer....just a collector. Look forward to hearing from you, one way or the other.

It's almost always better, in almost every situation, to buy the cards already graded as compared to opening product. The exception to that may be sealed vending cases just because of the bang for the buck. Wax=no, Cello=no, Racks=usually no, Individual vending boxes=usually no. All of those are a gamble. You need 1 or 2 big cards to grade high to retrieve your money. Otherwise, you've just pissed away enough money that you could have bought a stack of PSA 9's for your set. Sealed cases, you pretty much know what quantity to expect. But look to throw around a good chunk of change after the cost of the case plus a lot of grading fees. You'll want to grade as much as possible from the case in hopes of recovering your investment.

  • ldferg,

The Fouts is part of the set, it would probably grade a 7 or 8 because it's OC. Overall the set is a beauty, many commmons that would grade 9 or even 10. The Theismann (spelling) is dead centered. All or most of the cards have sharp corners...not bad for a 30 year old set. Of the cards that would grade less than nrmt, I can only see centering issues and maybe ink smears (not too many of those). I wish I was a football collector and had $5k for grading. In my opinion it would be the #1 set.
