From the Archives - Early Set Registry Thread...

I was going through some old threads and stumbled across this thread that I remember quite well. This was posted at the time they opened up sets newer than 1956 for registration. It's funny to see how views on the registry have changed in just a few years. I used to be '69topps8' but lost the password and reregistered as 'gemint'. I took a bit of flack for registering my 1969 set at only 14% complete at the time. It's good to see that many register sets even if they're <1% complete.

  • That's interesting. All of my sets are pretty low % wise at this point. If everyone waited until they had a double digit completion % PSA would probably only be halfway to 10000 sets. image

How things have changed ! As of 2/29/04 I didn't own a graded card. Right now, I'm 4th on the 77 set, 16th on the 69 set and about 25th on the 65 set in addition to having a Yaz basic set on there. If I had to wait for all of them to be 25% or better I'd probably never have started graded sets at all. I LIKE tracking my progress on there. You were the forerunner for a lot of us John. Thank you

<< <i>. This registry is meant to encourage collectors/investors to build sets. You can add cards to the set as you obtain them, thus increasing the completion % and rating. Do any of you think the old registry was better where the same PSA 9 early 50's sets by David Hall and a few other millionaires were the only ones registered? >>

    John,

I want to compliment you on your foresight. The above quote shows that even three years ago, you knew what would make the registry popular. The ability to start a set at 0% and watch it grow is what is addictive. Moving up a rank on the registry list, or making the first page, has to be a thrill. I think Scott is right. If you, and others, had not lobbied for the minimum to be removed, we would be at 5,000 sets or less. Good job!

  • Just curious, What was the going rate for a PSA 8 common on Ebay back then right before the registry.

I Wonder about the cost of these in 8 back then?

Common prices were all over the place, like now. But overall, the prices were lower. PSA 10's would regularly sell for under $100. I purchased my Brock 8 on eBay around Christamas in 2000 for $230. I think it was the first one to hit eBay. I'm not sure about the Yaz because I already had it in 8 from my own submission and didn't track it's sales much. The card has always been in high demand, so I don't think the price would have been much lower than today. The first Shannon 8 wasn't graded until a few years ago and sold for $499 on MintState's website. I picked up my Shannon on eBay from DSL when they graded a slew of them several months ago. I paid $90 for an SGC92 which crossed to an 8.
  • Great tread and thanks for the info.
