Question about graded GAME/Autos..

What is everyones feeling on graded game used/ auto'd cards. The reason I'm asking, I got a letter from PGS talking about there new coin service. I had PGS grade a few cards, only 10. I got thinking that I have several Game/Autos, I'll never part with. It would be nice to have them slabbed for protection. PGS charges $5.00 plus the 11th card is free. I know this ia a PSA forum, but why not? It's protected, it's only $5.00, what do you see as being a downfall? Thanks guys, I always know I can rely on honest answers..

It's never a bad idea to slab a card. There may come a time when you may want to sell your card. The graded card is a frame of reference for collectors, buyers, and sellers. It will sell for much more and much more quickly than raw stock. BTW...once you get your graded card back, make sure it goes into a plastic sleeve. A pristine case makes the card pop...a scratched case detracts from whatever is inside. Enjoy your cards.
  • Who on earth is PGS?

(that is both a question as well as my answer, kind of a homonym)
Baseball Card Heaven, the closest card shop to the Las Vegas Strip.

Our current ebay auctions, and of course BaseBallCardHeaven.com

i can get more $ for a raw card than I can get for a slabbed card by an off-brand company.. (not that PGS is off-brand, they may be good.. but i dont know anything about them)..

  • I'm talking strickly for protection, not resale..

PGS is Professional Grading Service out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. My personal opinion is that they try hard. I think they are one of the better "bottom 4". The holder is like a PSA and customer service is great! By no means am I saying there top quality, I'm saying if the other 4 didn't exist I'd try and use them more..

  • If you're just using it for protection, $5 plus shipping to and from seems pretty expensive when a really nice screwdown/magnetic holder can be had for less than half that. Not to mention, what if a hair or dust or (eww) flake of dandruff gets trapped in the holder with the card? No way to get that out...happened to me with PSA 10 on one card, fortunately it's on the back.

  • Id stick with a screwdown holder, that way it it ever gets scratched all you have to do is transfer the card into a new holder. this is how i do mine. i also keep the screwdowns in a plastic team bag because i have found that the screws can sometimes scratch the holder stacked on top or bottom of it. screwdowns are cheaper & there is no risk of your card getting damaged or lost in the mail, you can find screwdowns that hold the cards by the sides & leave the corners not touching the holder if you like that way of storing them hope this helps

If you are bent on a "graded" holder, why not just wait for a PSA special or what about the other good companies like GAI, Beckett, SGC - look for a special and then ship'm out.

  • Let me clarify....I assume a first rate grading company.

I agree. PSA bulk rates are $6 on 100 cards. Wait for a special and you can get them graded at $5. whether it is for resale or just protection, it's still a good idea to get them graded.
The only issue are the oversized GU cards. There are currently no holders for them.
I wouldn't use a low-tier grading company. SGC and Beckett are better alternatives.
