Dealers who "BUY IT ALL!!!" ???

au58au58 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭
A number of threads have asked "Who's your dealer?" or "Who do you trust?".
Does anyone know of a dealer who truly pays fair prices for "everything"?
By fair, I mean 85% to 90% of bid.

I had several dealings with Michael Dixon from the boards and he bought everything from Bust Halves to foreign at reasonavble prices. He was fast and fair.

It really depends on what you are selling.

Fair has different meanings for different coins to different people.

I have a coin store, and for that reason, purchase anything from junk foreign to the finest US coins and paper money.

I will probably not pay 85-90% of bid for everything, but I will purchase everything.

It all depends on what kind of material that you have.

Michael Dixon is a fine guy and I am sure that there are others who will be happy to purchase all of your numismatic holdings, just like my self.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Dunno, except to relate an experience I had with a dealer who regularly advertises "Buying all coins" (mostly). I posted an ad on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum on many certified PCGS coins. The dealer who advertises "Buying All Coins" made an unsolicited offer on my coins for approximately less than 50% of fair market value (as determined from prices realized off eBay, Teletrade and Heritage). Needless to say, I refused the unsolicited offer and went on to sell most of those coins above the unsolicited price the "Fair" dealer offered me (which was ridiculous). I’ve read many posts by others who stated that this dealer offered fair prices, but that wasn’t my experience (and remember, he approached me – not I). Your mileage may vary, but this is my story. Know the value and you can't be ripped because of your ignorance.

Because of a few PM's I will clarify further. I posted an ad containing numerous PCGS and NGC proof Franklin halves for sale on the B/S/T board, and Michael Dixon sent me an unsolicited PM suggesting that he would pay a certain dollar amount for the coins I was offering for sale (an amount 50% or better under the prices being realized on the same graded coins at the major selling places). Not only was I offended, but I vowed never to do business with him - based on his grossly unfair, unsolicited offer. Again, your mileage may vary.

On average collector coins, a dealer will need a bigger spread than that. I'd say 20 - 25% is more realistic.

A "street dealer".....MUST.....buy everything. NOTHING will send a seller out the door faster than wanting to "pick" the coin or coins the dealer....WANTS.

    As to 85-90% of bid......NOPE.

To buy "glorp" coins, you have to hold the junk until you get enough to ship. IF...however, you want to sell huge quantities of glorp, the dealer can buy pretty high.

However, NOBODY is CONSTANTLY paying 85-90% of bid for ALL coins. "Bid" can sit at the last price offered for some obscure grade of coin for years with no transactions.

    JR,

You have a thin skin as usual. If you advertised the coins, how can you suggest Michael made an unsolicited bid? Your ad was a solicitation to anyone, unless you said, "Michael Dixon, please don't try and buy these coins from me." What is grossly unfair about his offer? Why can't you just politely say "No thanks" and leave it at that? Except for HLM, most people here like Sgt Michaeldixon.

I can see where there might be some confusion, so let me clarify. The reason I can state that Michael Dixon made an unsolicited bid on the coins I posted for sale is that:
    1. I posted individual prices on each coin that was below current fair market value, and
    2. Michael Dixon sent me a PM (unsolicited) stating to the effect that my coins were worth less than 40% of what I had posted as my selling prices, and suggested he would offer to buy at his price - I passed. Hence, my post which directly related to the topic at hand - unlike yours.

And for whatever it's worth, I had already PM'ed a link to this thread to Michael Dixon. Just so you know i play fair.

I may have sent JR an offer, I don't remember and I don't save pm's. If I offended you, I apologize. Normally, I don't make unsolicited offers, as I receive more than my share of coins in the mail. It is, and always has been my policy: "I cannot evaluate a list and I DO NOT make sight unseen offers,"

  • No worries Michael. I wasn't trying to knock you, I was only relating a situation that directly pertained to the thread topic. No one got hurt.
  • I always pay at least 85% of bid for decent stuff but I can't pay 85% on everything. If I paid 85% on everything I would need a loan and another 4000 sq ft.
I'm in contol of my own losses.

    0h my

paying 85% to 90% or less......................... of bid

i have collectors who would need anywhere from 1.5 to 10 times bid for their coins

i will suggest to them not to bother wasting their or others time by putting their coins on the buy sell trade boards

Has anyone ever done business with Richard Nachbar? I have seen him at major shows but never had a transaction with him. For more than a year, the theme of his media campaign has been "paying top dollar".
  • krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
A little tidbit about Nachbar... in a recent CW or NN they had a short article about him. Someone brought him a complete 20th century type set including gold in a custom Capitol holder. Nachbar believed the coins were stolen and somehow talked the seller into leaving the coins with him. The seller never returned and Nachbar is trying to find the owner.

That impressed me, as a lot of people would have looked the other way just to make a buck.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

wow krankster, thats a serious story indeed...

as for Michael, id trust him with ANY OF MY HOLDINGS. I have had nothing but good dealings with him, and will always do business with him. I have been around for a LONGTIME, and people with the same linear time here (big word) image people are well aware of my charector and ethics, so believe me when I tell you this isnt a sales pitch.

    ITS FACT

I have two local dealers. One is a rip off artist and the other will pay 90% of bid for any U.S. coin. He is an older guy who hates slabs, so there is no premium for, say a PCGS MS63 Vs. a raw coin in 63. He has a ton of vest pocket dealers who come and go, and, I believe, sells most of what he buys in a day or two.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

    JRGman,
I know you're just a kid, but you should get your facts straight, as your ignorance is very obvious. "when they attack someone and the attack is merely defended againest..." Where did I attack somebody? This is the second post I've made to this thread and in the first one, well, go back and read it. This is the second time you've made a snide remark about me without basis. If you have a problem with me, please send me an e-mail or call me collect. I've not had any dealings with you, so you know nothing about me.

WHO is this directed towards?? If it's MD, then I think you should take his advice and call him or at the very least apologize to him and Pontiac for jumping into the middle of something you know nothing about.
