What is the Honus Wagner of Hockey Cards??

I was just looking through the SMR and debating and started thinking of what the holy grail of hockey cards is. SMR lists a Bobby Orr USA test rookie in psa 9 , whixh doesn't exist , at $25,000. Personnally I think that card may be worth more if a worthy example ever came up. not knowing much more about hockey cards , what is the most valuable sought after hockey card? thanks

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Yep I agree with MS.
  • What is the going rate on one of those?
  • Did the Wentz's have that card graded?

BMW has or had an SGC 96 Vezina offered for $125k.

however, i would not consider this the "Wagner of hockey" for a few reasons
    1. the Wagner is a notoriously tough card due to intentional manufacturer short-printing. the Vezina is not. it is the most valuable regularly distributed prewar hockey card, booking at about $5k in ex-mt. it is valuable due to the card being a rookie of one of the most famous hockey players in history.
    2. the Wagner has national prominence, mainly due to news outlets and the like picking up on the story. the Vezina is not well known outside of hockey circles, and the reason it commands 6 figures in high grade is due to extreme rarity. in low grade, it sells for $2-$3k

if you're looking for a similar card in stature to the Wagner, try the 1924 Maple Crispette Sprague Cleghorn- many similar characteristics, including- HOFer, intentionally short printed, impossible to find, high book value ($15k), and notorious in the hobby as "the" card. there are a few other impossible vintage hockey SP's, but the only famous hall of famer is the Cleghorn
  • Will - Are you sure it isn't "Foghorn Cleghorn?" I say, I say come here little chickie.

I'd also like to cast my vote. I'd say the 1990 Score Eric Lindros RC. There just isn't alot of those out there....

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?
  • Yup not a lot of 1990 Lindros since pro-set didn't include himimage

  • First off, I agree with Goodriddance with his points made, however my top card would be the 1911 c55 George Vezina.

As for the 1924 Maple Crispette Sprague Cleghorn, I never seen one for sale for I have been collecting Hockey for 18 years. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can fill us in on the true value and scacity of this card issue. Goodriddance , have any picks this...

There is a big difference between card values and scarcity. If this was based on values, chances are the mint version of a Howe or USA test Orr would probably top the money list. I do wonder what Mint Morenz would go for a well in either 1933 Sport Kings or the Opc card.

    Hockeybonkers,

beckett did a "top 50 hockey cards of all time" piece for their 50th issue some years back. they couldn't even find a scan for the CLeghorn! i've seen scans of the Watson short print a few times, but never the Sprague.

if a PSA 9 Orr Test ever hit the market, i would expect it to hit at least $50k. at least. Howe would probably bring $25-$30k (a PSA 9 54 Topps sold for $10k a few years ago). the '23 Morenz would bring 6 figures if graded a 9, although i doubt anything that high will ever come to light. BMW currently has a 36 WWG Morenz SGC 9 for $50k
