Opinions on the ACCGS grading company

Hi,

I have a chance to pick up some MS63 to MS64 Rainbow toned Morgan dollars… they are slabbed by the ACCGS… does anyone have experience with this company? Are they in line with the PCGS, NGC & the ANACS or do they have a rep of over-grading like PCI? Are they somewhere in between?

Thanks,
Anthony

Treat them the same as raw coins. If they were really good, they would be in ANACS, PCS or NGC Holders.

No one is in line with them... that's why they're clearly the top 3.

As for ACCGS, I think I've heard of them, and I'm almost positive they suck.

I'll venture to guess that an ACCGS slab is worth no more of a premium than a raw coin sold at the Beverly Hills Coin Club in a cardboard 2x2 with a grade written in pencil. Their website trumpets a few eBay auctions where their graded coins brought strong prices. We will never see the Coin Dealer Newsletter publish what percentage of Graysheet Bid ACCGS coin trade for sight unseen.Website

  • Do you mean ACGS out of AZ? Jerry

Edit: they're in Beverly Hills, California.

Do you know how to grade coins and detect artificial toning? If you can then it won't hurt to take a look as long as there's a return policy. But if you have no clue then run away as fast as you can and find a reputable dealer with whom you can bestow your trust until you learn more about how to grade. You're probably being lured in by the prospect of "bargain" prices and those usually turn out to be anything but.
  • I just looked at their website to see if they advertised ANA grading standards. I didn't see it.

    ACCGS.

    Who??

That says it right there. Never heard of 'em. As Wolf359 said, if you have never heard of a grading company, treat its product as if you would a raw coin, because there is no telling what sort of stuff gets into their holders.

The fact that their acronym contains the letters A, C, and G makes 'em all the more suspect. image

Sounds like somebody is profiling...... image
I agree with tonelover- if you trust your skills, and know about morgans, then take a look at what's offered. Otherwise, you might be better off spending your money on a safer bet....

To put it politely, you would be out of your *&^#@%% mind to buy rainbow toned Morgans dollars (or just about anything else except perhaps state quarters at face value) in "ACCGS" holders.

Please, all newer collectors, and even those of you have have been around a while, save yourself a LOT of money and heartache, and stick to coins certified by the reputable grading services: PCGS and NGC. If you really must, go ahead and look also at coins in ANACS, SEGS or ICG holders, but consider the fact that they may be overgraded (SEGS especially), or artificially toned (I have seen quite a few in ICG holders), or inconsistently graded (ANACS - sometimes undergraded ... but you better know what you're doing).

Personally, I prefer to recommend ONLY PCGS and NGC. In my opinion, any service OTHER than the ones I have already mentioned is likely to be a total disaster. PCI, NTC, ACG, etc.

    Caveat emptor !!!!

No comments but one observation, the VF-30 1908-S indianhead cent that I got as an example of the slab for my reference set does not have a full LIBERTY.
