What is the coolest coin...

that you have admired the longest and can afford but have not bought?

I have admired the Athenian tetradrachm with owl reverse ever since I started collecting coins as a 7 year old, but I have never bought one. My lame excuse is that it doesn't "fit" into my collection and that I've never taken the time to learn about ancients. image

For me it would be the New Coinage Crowns of George III.

Sounds silly, but high grade US two cent pieces. I collect mint state Canadian coppers, so the two cent fits and I like the design and the sense of history. My problem lies in that I think most US coins are overpriced. Two cent coins are more reasonable than other series, but only because demand kinda sucks. A catch 22.

Funny, I'd have to say the same thing. I started as a ten-year old and have liked owls since I got over my early childhood terror of them. My grandmorther collected owls and I have not only her collection, but have added a few myself. Now you're talking about a cool ancient silver coin with an owl on it, and one I have always liked, and... well... there you have it. Just what you said. I have told myself that when I finally do get an Athenian owl, it'll be a nice one. EF to AU or better, well-centered, with a well-executed Athena on it. I prefer the archaic "old style" owls but like the newer portrait of Athena on the "new style" tetradrachms better than the goggle-eyed one on the archaic design. I have seen some pieces that might have been from the transitional period that I liked. It might be some time yet before I ever get one.

UNLESS I find an otherwise-decent one with a small, well-placed hole in it, so I can attach it to the Holey Coin Vest. image

And the proofs are even more overlooked than the MS pieces!

I sold that baby back in February and miss it some. It was a borderline cameo coin. There were about 600 of them struck.

Ph@*k. Nice coin! Your right, the series is one of most overlooked US series. If you are collecting for the beauty, the rarity, the rush of it all, two cent pieces are very cool. As an investment they probably will underperform. Neat coins though.

For me it would be the "Marengo" 20 franc pieces of 1800-1801. Krause is so far off the mark as far as the actual selling price of these is concerned there's no point in consulting it!

In this condition it's at least $2,000... image

BTW. I have some high grade Vicky coins from Brit. Hond. and other Colonies. Is Krause an accurate guide on this stuff. I've had it for 25 years, so I'm not sure what is accurate.

You wouldn't happen to have a 1901 British Honduras 25-cent piece, would you? image

I guess Krause is accurate as anything else on that sort of stuff, since to my knowledge, no specialist publications for coins of British Honduras exist. In areas where there is wide collector interest and specialization, like Canadian or British coins, or thalers, or whatever, then the specialist publications will usually supercede Krause. But for a general guide, Krause can't be beaten, in my opinion. The disparity between catalog price and real-world price will always vary, as in anything else.

Will an 1889 penny or an 1894 five cent silver do it for you?

Funny thing is I always admire coins I cannot afford. image Among these are the Sede Vacante Eichstatt 2 Thaler with the tree of knowledge, the 17th century danish Riksdaler with the sword cutting the arm aiming at the Danish throne and many others...

The Saint Gaudens $20. Although I did own a very pretty 1924 ICG MS66 for a while, I'm now for a long time without one. I don't buy one, to keep the romance going. image

Can't think of one,,, if I like it I buy it. I kinda wish I had my High relief St Gaudens back. Though I guess a nice Una and the Lion would fit on the list.

The Gothic-like Victorian Indian rupees. They are lovely pieces and someday I will get one.

The entire set of 1718 Swedish 1 Daler coppers with images of the Greek and Roman gods. I just acquired two-I'm not sure it's the cost-
rather the finding of them that's difficult.

The one and only coin I wish I had bought when I had the chance is the 3 Rouble Yemen Roaring Lion that Cosmicdebris use to use as his icon. It is breathtaking and I don't see any for sale lately.

i can think of two: one would be a Dutch lion daaler-- very affordable, very historical and i just havent swiped one up yet. The other would be a roman coin of Galba, as I have an eye to completing a poor man's Twelve Caesars set. I still need Otho too, but that will take some doing.

A Charles II 1674 half guinea in VF, a real beauty i had the cash for it but never got around to buying it, and yep it's still there.

One day maybe... or maybe not.

I've still never got around to buying a gold guinea (had plenty of halves but never a full one).
