Help needed with this Franklin

I have always been able to determine what was wrong with my coins that got bodybagged. On this one I can't. Any help?

Anything goofy happening along the bell lines?

Beats me, looks like a run of the mill unc. 52 Frankie. Is there anything funky with the bell lines that we can't see in the image? That is the only place I've seen tooling on Franklin halves.

Ken, what is that between the eagle and the C in AMERICA? That's the only thing I can see on this from the image, but that doesn't appear to be bad enough to warrant a bodybag.
  • To me it looks 65.
  • There are a few minor ticks in the bell lines. Nothing else! Here is a pic. It's the best I could get...Ken

Ken, if you have a high power loupe, check out this part of the upper bell line. From the image, this area looks suspicious.

    image
  • Eric, there is the finest scratch across there as well as what looks to be the beginning of some toning. That's about all I can see.

I may take this along to Pittsburgh and see if PCGS can tell me what they saw, or see!....Ken

Well, if that area checks out, about all I can tell you is they must have got to your coin at 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon. I would send it back on your next submission, you know what happened to Russ. Is the 52 one of the big ones for FBLs?
  • It's not a pricey coin, but I had it pegged 65FBL with a shot at 66....Ken
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
I would send it in with your next submission. Usually, tooling jobs on the bell lines are pretty crude. If it comes back a second time with the same NG reason, then you know there really is a problem.

Did you check the rim for something there? mike
  • I could not find anything wrong with the rim either. This really baffles me....Ken

I see it now- there appears to be some grafitti in the wooden thingy that holds the bell. mike

PCGS bodybagged a 1962 proof Frankie of mine for environmental damage. I saw nothing wrong with it, so I turned right around and sent it in on my next submission. It graded.

  • Russ, that may really be the thing to do, that is to resubmit. I was going on the presumption that they might be right...image

I am not kidding the X on the right side is as plain as day once you see it and the writing on the left side becomes pretty apparent as well. mike image
    • "damage or tooling" is a catch all description that they will use for various types of problems. Is there something damaged on the 3rd side of the coin? If not, then it looks good to me.

        Ken,

I think I see it. Look between the F and D in HALF DOLLAR. That definitely appears to be tooling.

        Let us know.

You guys don't see the sideways M in the right circle Darktone posted? I do.

I can't make out what's in the left circle, but there sure is something there also.

Seems plain as day to me. I must be smokin' the same batch as Darktone I guess. image

          Darin and Mike,

Yes, I see what you mean on the right, but I believe you are seeing breaks in luster and your eyes are visually playing "connect the dots".

I still think there's tooling between the F and D. Who knows. Maybe it's my eyes that are playing tricks.

Why can't the grading services be more specific with their reasons for claiming a coin has been tooled. Couldn't they easily state exactly what they see was done to the coin?

Best way I can describe it is that it's an area without any luster!...Ken

I traced over the area I am talking about- maybe this will help you see it? mike

          • Mike, maybe the lighting when I photograped is playing with our minds. With the coin in hand, and slowly rotating side to side, there is nothing in that area.

I'm going to take the coin to the ANA show and ask PCGS what's wrong with the coin.....Ken

            Ken-

My guess and I bet I'm right....."counting machine mark." That's a direct quote from my last bodybag. At least they wrote me a message on my bodybag slip. It has very faint marks near the rim. So I sent it to NGC. Got my grade from NGC today on the same PQ Walker they bagged......NGC graded it MS66. Isn't it silly that they bagged it and NGC graded it 66. The coin is very PQ but they think they saw a "counting machine mark." Whatever. Look near the rim for small, insignificant scratches. That's cause to take your money and send you a 2x2 flip with your coin and no grade........

I think there is something strange in the field between AMERICA and the eagle.

            Hello,

I think its the obverse. Something looks a tad fishy in this area.

            hope this works:
