I am sorry to see you being sniped in the 2000 set. I have the ONS set which is #5 presently. You and E. Lyle have been strong the past month, and both of you have played straight up. Neither of you have anything to be ashamed for. I think people like the Lothlórien owner should be required to attend the luncheon to receive their dutifully honors. Maybe they could receive the true meaning of the recognition from their fellow members like you. Like you said, I hope they are happy...ric

I know everyone loves to compete.
But I collect coins for the enjoyment and fun of it.
When you get too serious, there's no more fun in it.
besides, all my sets, whether they are 100% or not are not in any way competitive with anyone in the top 30 positions anyway.
It is the trmendous challenge of completing a set that makes it interesting to me.
Finding that elusive coin that you've been looking for for months, cherry picking at the coin shows, going through all the raw coins looking for the ultimate PCGS submission, et cetera.

I think you all did great and my hat's off to you all.
A toast to you all for the great collections you all built up.

Just curious folks, would you feel different if the set was put up a day ago, a week ago, a month ago? It would still be the best assuming you put up your best.
    Just curious.

The connotation, may be due to the (newly overabused attention-getting) use of the word "sniping"...
...a day, an hour, a month...
hats off to the #1s, and the 2s and 3s, etc... image

I like the idea of limiting the upgrade/additions to 10% in the last month. Congrats to all who put togather nice sets.

I am surprised and happy to remain at #3 in the Lincoln cent wheat proof set registry behind Stewart and Doug. They truly have great sets. I sorta am disappointed that Roger's set exists on the all time list because I think he just put it together as a business exercise rather than a dedicated long term effort. I do hope many more of the Lincoln cent collectors will enter this particular registry (1909-1958) in the coming year. It is a great and challenging set to complete. Congratulations to all the winners. Steveimage

I think that the sniping is no different than those who keep their set closed. In both cases you have no idea what the other person has. I know in some of the major sets the key players do not want to be held hostage for the one coin they may need. However, best is best. To me it does not matter when you register your set. Everyone has the same rules.

It is difficult to lose at the last minute, but the reality is that another set was "better" under the rules everyone knew about.

It would instructive to note that in general the Merc collectors cheer on their collecting counterparts and drool over quality coins. I wish there were more of that attitude around. I collect for myself and see the registry as community where good things can be shared.

    How true.

The underlying theme of the Registry seems to be the collection of PCGS Registry Set Certificates, rather than coins.

Are the certificates going to be worth something some day? How about the year in which you placed first, listed beside your collection name. Will that get you a free grading, a free dinner, a free drink?

If you don't have the best in your set, expect to be #2 or lower. You can't be #1 is you don't have all the poptop's.

I now have the Sacagawea Proof Dollars #2 set after having the #1 set for two years running. All I can say is congratulations Candy great work getting that 1 of 3 2000-S PR70.

If "winning" was so important to you, why didn't you step up and upgrade some coins? Did you not know that there is a deadline each year? Not bashing you, just curious.

Just think: smoeone might have a set better than yours, and not even register it! Smoe folks leave a coin out on purpose cause they don't like to brag. Don't kid yourself that the "all time finest" really means the all time finest. Smoe folks even collect attractive, amazing RAW COINS!image

Most here have a reasonable grip, and know that PCGS ALL-TIME FINEST means:
the all-time finest set REGISTERED WITH PCGS. No mirrors, just the way the game is played.
I really don't think that it has gone unnoticed that there are some major players who don't choose to participate in the reg. thing.
    That is fine (too?).

As long as the playing field is level for all, I think it's fair to snipe. Not that I am in contention in any set. image Same as with the auction snipes, last second bids count. Now that, I am guilty of, and have had it happen to me many times in return. Again, thats a level field and we all know it's going to happen. I all boils down to doing your best, and let the chips fall.
