Die crack?

I just got this proof Jefferson today. Does the line at about 1 o'clock look like it might be a die crack or is it just a gouge on the coin? Sorry for the bad pics.

If it goes into the coin, it's a gouge (or, very unlikely, a large die chip... VERY unlikely)

If it is raised, you've got a die crack image

If it were incuse it could also be a struck through or a bit of lamination peel, but from the lighting direction it appears to be in relief. It's not a die crack, so my educated guess is a die gouge.

  • Thanks for the replies. With further inspection, it seems to be a gouge (goes into the coin).
