Troll question/comment

A couple of recent threads with "mikey", as well as some rehashing of old thread wars involving dcamsomethin' and others, got me to thinkin'... It seems that many of the sharper tools in the shed around here are quick to notice when someone is acting troll-like, or is an actual troll. I would guess that this would be accusations of people that come around here to try and defend coin sham artists, or at least deflect attention from them. So I guess that's my main question- what is the purpose of a troll anyway?? Is it really to try and put seeds of doubt into the minds of newbies, to get them to experiment with third world slabs or partake of AT coins? Is it just to try and piss off a few of the high flyers around here?? Is it just a mild variety of mental illness that prompts somebody to adopt a new screen name and then get pile-driven by the more outspoken coin minds here?? Is there a bigger story or hidden agenda that I don't know about? So let's talk about trolls!!

    NEVER go under the bridge.
  • Seems that "mikey" is another name for a certain company and perhaps a Nom De Plum for a shill bidder.

A troll is simply someone who posts something just to get a reaction from people. That's all there is to it.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Trolls can have many intentions for doing their trolling.

It could be a need for attention, even negative attention is better than no attention.

It could be an attempt to substantiate someone else with no impirical proof (someone else agreeing is their proof)

It could be a person that thrives on pi$$ing off other people and otherwise causing difficulty.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but this is a start.
  • Confuse a newbie? Newbies get confused from experienced newbies, collectors, dealers, etc when they hear. "Buy the coin and not the slab" I'm going to put a post up about this, because sometimes that saying causes more harm when it's not meant to be that way. Jerry
  • My question: Does the term "troll" refer to the thing that lives under the bridge, or the fishing method where you drag bait behind your boat ?

I always thought it was the latter since someone posts a message trying to get others to "take the bait" and create strife/controversy/kicking and screaming.

    Or do trolls troll?

A troll is a mole that sometimes pops out of his/her hole to partake in negativity. At least that's what I have gathered since I've joined the forum.
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
